I can only dream of the day that get good and confident enough to pull a song out the hat in front of people and play well. :face_with_spiral_eyes: :joy:

Great choices of songs. I played brown eyed girl wrong all the time.
Bad moon rising and Good Riddance Time Of Your Life are also easy songs.

Try Spotify Mark. Search for all those songs and bands you like and similar ones will get suggested or added to tailored mixes for you. This will include new and newer artists playing similar stuff. A great way to discover new bands and songs, you may even find bands from those eras that never go the air time in the states but were tearing up Europe at the time.

I stopped listening to mainstream radio about 40 years ago so know where you’re at, :sunglasses:

I guess they don’t play it on:

The thing that struck me in that lesson was the improvement in Justin’s singing. He managed some things that I’d think were fairly difficult to make sound ok.

Nice job, Justin (@JustinGuitar)!

Hello Justin, thanks for sharing this setlist. Some songs were a surprise for me (e.g Britney and Jimmy Buffet) but most of them have been on my setlist for a long time and you’re absolutely right: they work at every party. I would add Wild World by Cat Stevens though. Also a song which everybody seems to able to sing along to.
Greetings from Germany and keep on strumming and picking.

Just watched the video !

What have I been saying about playing Brit Knee all these years ! Validation at long last.

But definitely not on my 3 playlists though. :scream:

Hey Justin, that’s a great set list for some impromptu party playing and the chords for at least half of those songs are already in my phone’s Notes app - great minds think alike!
I‘m based in the UK near the south coast and am lucky enough to belong to a regular acoustic guitar jam night, where most of your top 10 songs feature regularly.
Here are a few more I know of that always get people singing along and are all easy and fun to play: Viva La Vida - Coldplay, What’s Up - 4 Non-Blondes, Half The World Away - Oasis, One More Night - Michael Kiwanuka and Dakota - Stereophonics.
Love what you do on JustinGuitar and hope to meet you one day to say thanks in person! :slightly_smiling_face:

It’s also OK to say no. There’s a time, place and vibe for everything. You are not obligated to perform for people. That said, if you are feeling “it” choose upbeat songs. If you play Mad World and such, you will do more harm than good.

For goodness sakes never bring out or pickup a guitar unless unanimously asked to do so.

Well said. If someone asks me to play for the assembled “audience” I’ll simply say “I’m sorry, but I’m not feeling it right now”.

And yeah, I’ve been to parties where I was enjoying a conversation with friends and someone dragged out a guitar and I’ve thought “Oh really? I have to stop talking and sing now?” What I have seen work well is when the guitarist and “singers” moved outside and did their thing.

Few other suggestions for Campfire, sing-along songs:

  1. Peaceful Easy Feeling by the Eagles. First campfire song I learned. Only has the the tricky F#m chord, but there is a shortcut chord you can use. Easy to sing.
  2. Maggy May by Rod Stewart - easy intro lick. Strumming of very basic chords. Everyone knows those lyrics.
  3. America by Paul Simon. Little tricky strumming, but once you get it, it very easy. A singing favorite.

Justin, thanks for your list. It’s nice to know not every song out there has to be a Led Zepplin complex exercie.

Keep up the good work,

Mark

When you are in France, what would be the 10 easy guitar french songs?

I am with CT here. I am not a famous guitar player, but as a doctor, especially a little more esoteric one as a neurologist, I do run into something similar. (Oh, you’re a neurologist? I have this friend with a brain tumor…My mom has Alzheimer’s…I have this tingling in my left toe…).

It isn’t fun to be put on the spot, to feel obligated to play, perform or be pressured. Justin loves guitar, but it is also his job and he was on vacation!

I appreciate his great attitude, and desire to be prepared. Very cool, but, I think he could just say “no thanks, I am on vacation”.

Blowing in the Wind, Folsom Prison Blues and Ring of Fire, Black Water, American pie- try remembering the words to American Pie. I knew them a long long time ago. Time of your life- it’s peppy.

Have to respectfully disagree with this.

We’ve played Mad World a couple of times at our local song circle group, and it was always well received (though to be fair, these were amateur musicians, not civilians…so maybe they’d be more receptive) .

“Good vibes only” might be a useful rule of thumb, but I think lot’s of people would be fine with more downbeat material as well.

Probably just a matter of choosing the right time and place.
