2024 Top 1 Guitar related Frustrating Aspect 😃

… in life in general

Guitar-related: Those moments (few and far between) where you suddenly realise how crappy you play, considering all the hours of ā€˜guitar-related-activity’ you have invested over the years (incl. this forum ).
Thankfully they don’t last

… and people who create a repeat Christmas song thread instead of posting in the one Rogier already created. (only joking )

I did apologize for that in PM

It simply takes time. At first it was the same for me, I couldn’t maintain the shape, the hand got tired very quickly. But the majority of the songs I play have power chords (very often only power chords) so I had no choice but to keep playing them and eventually they became natural and very easy to play.

I guess the answer is always the same : practice songs songs songs and more songs

As sad as it sounds I haven’t found any other working methods yet.

The B chord and it’s evil cousin B flat.

@brianlarsen , if we are getting into ā€œlife in generalā€, this will be a long thread…

But you are so right, especially as the world gets more complicated and crazy and of course we get older…sigh.

Another frustration in guitar is the thumb over. I have average hands for my size which is smaller in general and I like wide nuts, so thumb overs are just not feasible on the guitars I play the most.

Then I try and learn a song from someone like the ā€œSixString Fingerpickingā€ guy, and he casually throws his thumb over the 6th and even 5th string on a classical guitar with a 52mm nut.

Maybe we are a different species….

Oh, and one more thought I just had.

Frustrations are mostly just us pushing against our limits and accepting them as challenges drives us forward.

I will remember that whole piece eventually, and I will find a way to play that chord without the thumb over.

Remember the frustration of trying to play the D chord the first time?

Yes, it’s something i have to get used to. I was just expecting that after quickly picking up the F barre and then easily moving that shape up and down the neck, that power chords would be a quite easy. Turns out that muting strings is not so easy.

I’ll get there in the end!

Actually, I don’t skip any modules because, even if a module doesn’t look as interesting as some others, it’s often a nice surprise and turns out to be very enjoyable. I wasn’t too excited about learning finger style and really wanted to move onto module 12, but then it turned out that I really enjoyed finger style and immediately wanted to do more.

As its only Top 1 I’d say sextuplet licks !!

After all the licks we have learnt during BLIM there are 2 in the last unit that are doing my head in. There is a slow medley containing these licks at just 50 BPM so super super slow but with the equivalent of 24 notes in a 4 beat bar that works out at a crazy 300 BPM. But I won’t be beaten by them oh no sir, they will be tamed !!

Frustrating ? Not arf, said Fluff.

Unwanted string noise!!

I’ve spent the best part of 3 years learning how to make a noise with the guitar and now I’m trying to learn how to keep the damn thing quiet…!!

Palm muting. I can’t seem to get the ā€˜bounce’ and end up with a dull thud

Funnily enough, Toby, I came across a lick with sextuplets in it the other day and it looked wild but I gave it a go. The best I could do was split the beat in two and count it as:

1 2 3 + 2 3 2 2 3 + 2 3…etc

Might be worth a try.

1-e-trip-e-let-e-2-e-trip-e-let-e…

Say that fast after a couple of festive drinks

Its not counting or playing it. I’m good for the equivalent 210 BPM plus which is 70%.
It is playing it at tempo

I smashed my Kemper by tripping over it :sob: now got to sort out getting it fixed; more :sob:

That and I STILL can’t play Key to the Highway which I marked down as the No1 Blues song to learn this year. It’s worse than that, I haven’t even started practising it because I haven’t decided how and which version to learn it yet. The Eric Clapton version is not really my favourite one. I really like the recordings of Brownie McGhee but I have to figure that one out by myself so there you go. Excuses excuses excuses and annoyance with myself.

Start out slow then get the missus to tap the tempo up when you’re not looking.

Playing faster sections in general is a major problem. I do practice this and it is improving, but very slowly.
