Clipping videos for Practice purposes

This is something I do quite often on YouTube, it’s already a while I wanted to share and ask if anyone of you do it as well.

I clip videos for Mindful listening, for transcribing and work out vocal melodies by ear, for singing pieces along while reading them on the musicsheet and I guess I’m forgetting something :woman_facepalming:

The nicest thing with a clip is that you can send the link to your WhatsApp, from there you click on the image (not the written link) and the clip starts playing like in a loop, when it ends it automatically starts again without needing to touch the Smartphone…really convenient if one is ironing or grilling veggies or whatever! It’s really useful (and much enjoyable too!) when you want to get a piece clear into your musical imagination through repetitive listening.

My WhatsApp is full with Clips…here some just as examples of what I’ve written above:

Last clip I made is Dee by Justin…I can’t say how many times in a row I’ve already been listening to it…anyone else falling in love with this piece?

that’s very cool. The links above work for me on windows to start the clip in a loop. I have been using a web site called learnasolo to do this but it’s a bit finicky. I’ll try this next time i need something like it

Interesting idea Silvia, I’ve never tried that, but will now.

That’s a useful idea Silvia. It beats hitting stop and rewind on my Spotify playlist. And hey, that Justin guy you discovered can play pretty well!

Interesting idea. What software do you use to clip the video?

It’s embedded in you tube underneath where the save, like buttons are. Not all videos have the capability. The video uploader must give permission when they are uploading or after.

…the nylon strings too!!!

Hi Silvia,

I like to loop passages from YouTube performances when learning them. Sometimes it’s just to hear, sometimes it’s to watch the fingering, or both.

I use a Chrome extension called Looper for YouTube. It allows me to select a passage and loop it a specified number of times. This is what it looks like:

I use the Moises app for this sort of looping of small sections of a song. It automatically identifies the sections… Intro, chorus, verse, etc. It also makes slowing the section down very easy, and transposing, and you can isolate different instruments to just focus on the guitar, or provide a rhythm section while you play guitar.

The downsides… It’s not free, and it doesn’t work with videos (or maybe the newer versions do, but I’ve never tried it… I just buy the song off iTunes)

Hi Kevin, do you do this from smartphone/tablet or from pc?

This Moises App sounds really interesting! I think I once downloaded it for the free trial. I need sometime to check it again.

I use desktop. Also tried the smartphone, but it doesn’t allow extensions.

Nice use of YouTube clips. I’ve usually used something like SpotifyDown to download a song from Spotify in an mp3 format, then load it up into Reaper to loop sections, or slow things down. Sometimes I’ve split the tracks with Moises and then loaded each one into Reaper as a separate track. YouTube clips would probably be a quick alternative.

I need this bad.

How does it work? Is the quality good?

Have a look at the MediaHuman suite. Rock solid, standalone apps; quality, very simple and free.
In a space where there’s alot of dodgy/ faulty/ useless apps etc, this one is the quality exception.

Download video and/ or convert quickly to mp3 etc. Been using it for years. Total control over the process.
Of course, each person will need to consider their own stance on downloading content for various purposes.

Cheers Shane

I’ve had decent luck with it the couple of times I used it, but upon closer inspection it’s maybe not something I should be recommending. Seems to be some questionable aspects to it…

To transcribe and play along to YouTube I use the Transpose extension in Chrome to loop/slow/transpose and alter pitch (for example where recorded not at exact concert pitch - Paint it Black anyone  ). I use the free version.
