Coming back to Guitar - hello from Phil in Nashville

Hey everyone. My wife bought me a guitar in my mid 20s and I fiddled around with it for about a year or so. Learned 5-6 open chords and a few riffs, but never could really play anything. Add kids and 2 jobs…that guitar went in the closet. 11 years ago I sold it when I moved. Fast forward 20+ years. Kids are grown, my job is at home and I have plenty of time. Just picked up a Yamaha FG830 at the local music store and have been playing at least an hour a day for the last week and discovered this site. I am commited to at least doing something everyday.

Hey Phil,

welcome - wishing you all the best on your journey.

Do you have natural or sunburst finish on your guitar? I checked it out and it looks like great guitar.

That’s one of the key things in my view. Make playing part of your lifestyle. Even if it’s only 10 or 15 minutes a day. Welcome to the community. Look forward to hearing more from you.

Good for you, Phil, for getting back into it. Sounds like you loved to learn and play, life, as it does for many of us, just got in the way. Now it’s your time to enjoy it, have fun, and be sure to post a few videos of you playing on the site. Looking forward to those.

Welcome to our Community Phil! Justin said it really well…I wish you a wonderful journey into Music and guitar! We’re here for some good company and support on the learning journey!

Hello Phil.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community.

Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.

Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard

Thanks everyone! I think I am here to stay. Subscribed to the app, since I can’t believe the website is free! This is the best instruction I have seen around. Been doing 15-20 minute practice probaby 2-3 times a day. Commited to staying the course and keep practicing even for just a few minutes a day.
