Dmajor to D6/9

And that is why folk are trying to provide some guidance. We have all been there and have all trodden the same path. But there are many folk here who will pull you back on the path or point you in the right direction, when you veer in the wrong directions.
Folk who were helping me a decade ago are still here and providing the same service.

As you get further in your journey more of this will make sense. But please take advice offered here in the spirit it is meant and that is to make you a better player.

yes and no. this is where music theory starts to intrude on things. SO MUCH music that’s out there follows very common chord change patterns. they do that because those changes just tend to sound good to our ears.

yes, there is music out there that makes some significant deviations from those common patterns, but there are pretty specific reasons for those cases. those tend to be WELL OUTSIDE the realm of beginner practice.

As a beginner myself, it’s been much more effective for me to stick to those patterns (as they are used in the specific songs I’m practicing or building up to) and to use chord voicings/variations that makes sense for each specific application. Take, for example, the many variations on an open G chord. Even as a beginner not even 2yrs in, I tend to use specific variations in specific cases in large part because it’s easier to transition there from whatever chord comes before or after. Oftentimes when I’m learning a new song with a G chord, I play around with which variation feels more comfortable first, before I worry about which one sounds better in the song.

I absolutely don’t worry myself with chord changes that I’m not seeing in a specific song. It’s really easy to overwhelm yourself with too much material. I spent more than a few months in that realm and just recently got myself out of it.

X54455 = D6/9 = old way of writing chord shapes X=muted 6th string, the rest are fret numbers- the double 4th frets next to each other =use 1st fingerjoint bar and for the other 5th frets notes you would use other respective fingers- pretty logical if you think about it for awhile. another example- normal open D chord would be XX0232 - 0=open “D” string
