3 or 4 weeks into my guitar journey from being a complete newbie. I am currently using Justin’s app and getting towards the end of module 4.
I plan to run through grade 1 to get the basics and ideas then go back and have a full run through grade 1 again to really get comfortable with all the skills.
I think its always worth it to sharpen anything and base foundation is really important. If you suspect there is a thing you struggle with you can focus more on that than going through all modules, than repeating things you are really good at… because for me is more easy to stay doing things I can than things I struggle with.
But if you have time its really on you. In the end you will end with better base foundation and that is good.
Seems like a very good idea to me.
Each lesson leads to the next and you build on what you’ve already learned. And you will use what you learned in the previous lesson all the time.
Knowing what ya learned very well will do you good as you continue your journey.
Its not a bad idea at all. When I started with Justin, I already knew a lot of what was in grade 1-2 but I started from the beginning and I still learned a lot along the way. There is a lot of overarching principles especially in the early stages that can really help later on. Now I am in grade 4 and I still periodically go back and view earlier materials for information that I need clarity on.
That said, on your second run through, there is likely to be a fair bit of stuff that you will just skip over. I.E. you only need to learn how to tune the guitar once…
Hi Rickie,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun,
I had and still have a lot of time during the day to play and/or learn what I want
When, after 3 or 4 months of messing around on You Tube, I ended up at Justinguitar, I started binge watching all those videos (all )…and sometimes took small steps back…
every day I wanted to see and learn something new or see to know what I was going to learn soon… like a kid in a free candy store
But knowing that this way the way I did it would not teach me to play the guitar well any faster with a small risk of even learning a bad habit too quickly, because soon a lot went way too much above my level…
but I had I had to fill 8 hours in a day and use it as a sleeping pill … and wanted to fill those hours with guitar as much as possible and was aware of the possible disadvantages…
but if you watching everything in grade 1 with your guitar in hand and then doing it again is certainly a lot calmer and better than how I did it…
looking a few steps ahead and practicing it is what many do and is even encouraged…
No harm whatsoever. I went back to the beginning of the old Beginner Course several times back in the day and from various points along that journey. The old BC was the equivalent to todays Grade 1 & 2 (roughly) and took me 22 months. As I had restarted for the umpteenth time before finding Justin, I was determined to stick with it. So when things went very wrong or I got bogged down I just hit reboot. It gave me confidence in what I had learned, understood and “mastered” but constant red flagged shakey ground.
I also went back and did all of Grades 1 2 & 3 a couple of years ago, as there had been new material added in the course rewrite, Never any harm in reviewing where you have been and making sure you are still on the right road,
That’s what I am doing. The first time I went through it was to get a feel for the course and its content. I covered every lesson but didn’t use the Practice Assistant or learn any songs.
Now I’m going back through it from the start and taking more time over it and using the Practice Assistant. I’ve since bought the Songs app on the website, the Beginners Songbooks, the Beginners Course book and Guitar Pro.
I doubt that I could have successfully moved on to Grade 2 after the first run through. I could see me repeating the process when do I move to Grade 2.
After 1 and 3/4 years I’m nearly at the end of grade 2 and plan to spend time consolidating by going back through the lessons of grades 1 and 2 another time to pick up things I missed or didn’t do properly.
so it seems almost everyone did sort of this and I can’t add a lot…
Me, I rather kept the course going steadily and sometimes sprang forward into fun things I wanted to learn - in case that was doable at my skill level… but always went back
The main thing is to not skip anything totally - I mean leave out - that you don’t like too much or that seems difficult. Try it at least, practice. If that’s not your thing, go on, but I’d recommend to come back later and try that thing again. Most of the time It will be easier even if you practiced different things in the meantime.
