Dynamic vs Condenser

Well that is a pretty easy question to answer for once. Just go for Shure SM58 which is your industry standard vocal mic, built like a tank and will last for years. It’s a dynamic mic. Ideal for recording or performing.

Plus one from me, my go to dynamic. But the Shure S55 is also built like a brick outhouse and good for posing.

Do these both need a preamplifier to work?

Cheers Mate, great input as always:+1:. It’s a rabbit hole for sure. I do want to steer clear of anything too elaborate at this stage as this is early days so I’m not wanting to overcomplicate things, some great options that you’ve mentioned though and I’m adding them to my list of items to research :face_with_peeking_eye:.

Many of us have the Focusrite 2i2, they have a pack which includes a condenser mic (I bought this one), they even sell it at JB HiFi here in Oz

Yes. But every audio interface has built in pre-amps.

Hi JK, yes, I had seen that at JBHfi, just wasn’t sure about the quality of the Scarlett mic and headphones so it’s good to know someone that is using it👍. I take it the headphones aren’t closed back but guess that’s not the end of the world.

The mic is fine, the headphones are quite tight though, uncomfortable for me so I don’t use them.
