Four Strong Winds - Neil Young - sairfingers

@LBro @CT
Thanks for the listen and comments guys. Much appreciated as always. The jury’s out on the Trio backing track. LB liked it and CT says it’s like ‘a coconut shell clapping on a table’. :joy:

Part of the reason for my using a backing track was all the NY videos I watched of him playing the song included backing vocalists, 4 or 5 guitars, a violin, a pedal steel guitar etc. Me on my own just seemed so little.

Clint, you say you don’t like to pass on ‘nits’. Well I’m glad you did. I agree with you about the sound of the backing track, it could be improved or removed.

Passing on constructive ‘nits’ is what we need. On this forum/community we are all very encouraging and supportive of each other but if everyone just says “well done that was great”, how can we learn and improve.

Love this quote, I think it deserves a pin at the top of AVOYP section

Gordon, you are a Scottish legend, I really enjoyed that performance. I could sit and enjoy a whisky whilst listening to your performances all night long. I’m not experienced enough to pass on any constructive ‘nits’ so you will have to settle for a “well done mate”. Hope to follow in your footsteps sir.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment guys. Much appreciated.

Thanks also for the varied alcoholic beverage recommendations. You’re really not much help when I’m trying to have a dry January!
I’ll give your lager recommendation a miss though Adrian. Too many of them and I think you could end up blind. :joy:

Hi John. I’m so glad you enjoyed the song. Thanks for the listen. Glad I’ve introduced you to a new song. It’s from NY’s album ‘Comes a Time’.

I going to try to incorporate picking and strumming into my future efforts as I think that’s a natural progression from simply strumming. Well that’s my theory anyway.

I actually waited off to check on this thread because I’m not comfortable passing on nits any more. It’s not what I like or want to do. Rarely is it helpful to be honest. I’m just another dude with his own opinions. I’m glad you took it in the right context.

That said, my personal experience with the Trio bass and drums are mostly negative, but they seem to do best in the FX loop rather than the front end of an amp. They tend to suck tone when you play guitar through them as well. Yes, I have the original Trio and not the plus, but I’ve heard nothing to date that makes me think the plus has overcome these issues.

It’s something I started to do about a year ago but it’s a pretty steep learning curve for me. Working on a few songs on and off all with many errors! Coincidentally, the latest picking/strumming piece I’ve added to my practice list is a NY song: Needle And The Damage Done. Great, Great one to play but sooo hard to get it right. I’d better stop…this is your song thread! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Obviously I can only speak for myself Clint but when I post on AVoYP it’s with a view to getting any constructive criticism and advice that’s offered.
‘Well done’ and ‘that was great’ are gratefully received too of course!

Thanks Tony. It’s a great song and in many ways not all that ‘Neil Young’. Yes, get it back onto your rotation!

Haha! I hear you. Most times I want to offer nits to other people’s nits. See how far this can go? Better to play what you want to play the way you want to play it and then develop self-awareness about how well you did or didn’t do.

Lastly, I don’t consider myself a good enough player to dispense too much in the way of critical advice.

Even really good players don’t always agree on things:

A lot of sound advice for me to take to heart.

I guess at the end of the day its how you word or phrase it. And that is difficult in a media that does not convey sentiment, as in what you would see visually in a 121 situation. It’s hard but when someone is not up to scratch you need to convey that without sounding negative, so I guess you just have to be mindful of what you are typing.

I have had a couple of recent responses from folks, who’s comments on my recordings invoked, what my old boss used to refer to as “bristling” when he new something was getting my back up. But knowing the authors, helps tremendously, to put that into perspective and see that they are only offering advice and not a kick in the nuts !

Don’t like eggshells but sometimes you just need to tread carefully.

Cheers

This is exactly why I don’t comment on very many AVOYP posts.
My wife says I don’t have a filter so I never know if I’m helping
someone or crushing a snowflake.

Stitch sometimes ground almonds are better than whole thing but we have to pussy foot around how that may be perceived. I’d rather I get feedback warts and all and can draw some perspective.
Its hard, its tough love but sometimes its just true.

I got the gist recently on a post that it lacked feeling or soul, Didn’t feel that way at then time but I can take solace and revaluate. Simples.

Very descriptive lol. When I start posting attempts to solo in my Learning Log I will make it known that although I live in the land of snow I am not a snowflake. AVOYP stuff is mostly just for fun, so kudos or constructive criticism, either (or nothing!) is fine by me

Please don’t skip over this part. If the shoe fits, wear it. Gordon was laying it all out there without 13 loop cuts – the best take wasn’t cherry picked in the DAW while “B-roll” video of butterflies fluttered across the screen. Or 15 takes in a soundcloud track. It was a complete song with nowhere to hide.

We all do these things and most of us are not qualified to critique other people. That’s the truth. You have your 5-7 year guitar player patch? What does that even mean? Be supportive, point out what you liked, don’t be a nit. I’m not all that, and you’re not all that either.

Yeah, how about those nits about facial expressions, wardrobe and song length – really helpful. I’m as guilty as anyone.

Loved every minute of this Gordon. You’re an engaging performer.

 reminds me of him being sued by his record company for making an entire album that was “not all that ‘Neil Young’”

I guess it would depend on which Neil Young you are talking about. I think gentle folk/country/acoustic is quite Neil Young, but not the “Godfather of Grunge” Neil

Thanks so much for the listen and supportive comments Stitch, always appreciated especially after reading your other post about not commenting much on AVoYP.

-27C wow. I confess I’ve had to look up a map to see where in Canada Alberta is. And you’re not even the most northerly territory! What can the temperature be up there? Polar bear country I guess.
I remember you saying you humidified the house to keep your Gibsons from drying out in winter. That must take a fair bit of management!

Thanks for the listen Dave, so pleased you enjoyed the song. My plan is to work on the chord embellishments in future songs.

Glad you found that reply button! I’m finding it very difficult to keep up with things on this new Community site. At the moment it seems so much busier than the old site and posts disappear ‘off the page’ very quickly.
