Thank you so much Brian @brianlarsen and also for the link - those ice-cream varieties just made me laugh. I definitly wanted to write a happy song, and I think so did Natalie. My original inspiration was Guy Clarke’s homegrown tomatoes - if he can sing about tomatoes I can write a song about pumkins, right?
Jim @jvlynch I think you are right actually, only the Halloween things are pumpkins - all the others that Clint I and I talking about are actually squashes. Still thinking about how I can train them to play guitar though
Clint @CT Yes, they are from Carol Deppe! Give them a try if you haven’t already they are really nice and nutty.
Thank you so much Ben @BenHorrocks for your detailed feedback!
I had thought of this video as a video to show and share the song, and have indeed not paid so much attention to the performance. To be honest I was too keen to finally share it and happy that I can now sing it through at all and then I neglected a few things (like checking the balance between voice and guitar). With all the music I have written so far I have penned it down bit by bit and then when I finally have everything in place the way I want it to be then I find I can’t play it end-to-end and need to actually practise it! Looks like I should have practised it a bit more - that would have smoothed out the timing wobbles that do indeed creep in into the wordier sections.
I was also thinking about shortening the wordy parts, but those sections had some of my pet images in there (e.g. the sombreros) and in the end I was just ah well it’s the first actually fully finished song, it’s a start and does not have to be perfect. But I need to allow more space for the words when I sing it, for sure!
Interesting notes about the confidence and the singing … you are right, I do indeed have “more in the tank” but I never let it fully out - not sure why, I will need to ponder this one over a bit and maybe experiment with it…
Hi Molly,
Nice finger work play and vox you got going! Your timing is good as well. You are likely using a single mic and the mix was pretty good for that…
But honestly, the above is not why we are here I do think. We are talking song writing and you came up with a dandy for your first go. I must say, that for a 2:12 minute long song, your lyrics cover a lot of ground. Kudos to you for keeping the song short. Most seem to want to tell their story and it takes many minutes. But in doing that, listeners tend to drop out and not finish the song. Roman (a good amateur producer that was once on here) used to say 3 min max for a song, tops and I think he was right in most cases. So you were able to tell your story in just over 2 mins and bravo for that.
So what is next? The path you went down with this is full of themes for other songs. Things like selecting seeds and wondering what they will yield. How the seeds are sown just so, watching the garden grow and a more detailed explanation of harvest. Then you could also do a minor chord song. Where them pesky bugs and other pests try and foil all your hard work. Just a few thoughts I had on your overall theme that could spawn more songs.
Good ol @CT is quite the gardener himself. I envy his sunny CA climate that can grow so many things and the long season he has… Maybe you 2 could collab someday…
Off to the garden as it is time to put it down for the winter.
You’re giving my quite some ideas for the next song - I wasn’t planning to stay with the garden theme but maybe I should, there are indeed lots of things to explore. I have a nice B minor progression ready, maybe B Dorian, will see. I also have a tagline ready for another silly, no: whimsy! song about my rooster Rusty “Cockadeedledoo - I like porridge too”. (his favourite treat.)
