Oh oh ā¦Laziness as an excuse for buying guitars with a little lie thrown in ā¦Beware of karma ā¦
I donāt want to brag (and then you know it happens ) but I have to slow my wife down from buying guitars for me, just because she likes it for me and she find that guitars are beautiful to just look at ā¦
Thatās a good story, Ian Actually any excuse is good if it leads to the desired goal , purchasing a new guitar in this case; besides, as Rogier wrote, there are women who appreciated the beauty of the guitar.
And as regards the capo, there are many guitarists who grab another guitar with a capo placed in the suitable position, and properly tuned (often itās a non-standard tuning). I saw Mark Knopfler switch from a strat to a Danelectro with a capo on the IIIrd fret only to play Boom, Like Thatā¦
your wife & mine are āKindred Spiritsā! Any time she sees me browsing for guitars online, sheās asking if I want to get this one or that one, or maybe something elseā¦ this is why Iām a bit embarrassed to admit - even to myself - just how the number has grownā¦
Well, that āformulaā for the perfect # of guitars (whatever you have +1) is always in the back of my mind!
I still play each & every one, though!!! Love them all!!!
I mean, who wants to have to keep twiddling knobs or finding the preset you just know you had somewhere? An amp for every tone you love is a MUST, right???
Tod
P.S. I can honestly say that my amp GAS is under controlā¦ I have a tube amp, a solid state amp & an acoustic ampā¦ why would I need more?
Why do I have like 6 more on various wish lists???
To begin with itās difficult to convince wives why we need more guitars, however i have found that the secret is to reach a minimum of about 12-15 guitars, by whatever means necessary. Once you have reached this critical mass you can then sneak new guitars in without SWMBO noticing, as they will all start to look the same. Its probably best to store most of them in a floor rack rather than āin her faceā on the wall that way if you ever do get challenged with āis that a new guitarā you can laugh at here and say āhardly, this has been in the rack for years. Itās just not one i get out oftenā.
I donāt have the GAS problem. Iām just not good enough with what Iāve got to justify any more guitars to myself, much less even try to explain to the wife why I need any more.
@mandalman the minimum for me was round the fifth, i guessā¦ Thereās seven of them now, and no more questions are being askedā¦ However, it now occurs to me that my wife stopped entering my ācaveā around the arrival of the fifth guitarā¦ Am i missing something?
@markr31 donāt you worry, it will come. sooner or later youāll find yourself either looking at gear or already going through checkout before even knowing what happenedā¦ It happens even to the best of usā¦
Haha! I like that bit!
I have aquired a tiny number of guitars, but I am always striving to keep it at a minimum number, so when Iād buy a new one, Iād also sell at least one other, or wishing for a more versatile electric guitar, or even āthe perfect electricā (that doesnāt really exsist), or maybe it could in the shape of a kind of Paulocaster with a wider fretboard and shorter scale length and not so high frets.
At least I got that idea of keeping the number as low as possible!
ā¦ ā¦ perfect for you could exist. All you need is to find a friendly luthier to perhaps build
one for Domi ?
Building an electric (solid body, or chambered) is fairly simple compared with an acoustic or hollow-body ā¦ just a lump of wood attached to a neck, fit some coils of wire, and add some bling ā¦ right ? ā¦
Yes, youāre percectly right!
When I first outspoke āperfectā wouldnāt exist, I was thinking in terms of āfor everybodyā.
My second thought then was in the sense of āfor meā. And this also doesnāt exist - yet! But I actually had thought quite a bit on the subject and started some plans already and bought a half ready neck from a local luthierās wood supply. Iāll definitely have to realize this very soon!
And I have exactly the same feeling about building electric versus acoustic. I would fear to get all the wood bending and shapes right and then, have the top resonate at least halfway evenly over the frequency spectrum without having annoying resonancesā¦
Now, sorry Ian, I didnt mean to hijack your thread!
No problem Dominique. Actually, guitar building is very close to my heart at the moment! I just 99% finished a strat partscaster build. You can see the diary of the build in the link below. I say 99% finished because I still have to make some small adjustments on Monday or Tuesday before I can screw down the pick guard and back plate. However, itās already completely playable and itās a pleasure to play a guitar built exactly as you want it to be. I invested the most money and also time in the neck. It was worth it. The neck is the best thing about it - totally levelled, crowned and polished frets (by me) make it a pleasure to play. Great pickups too and not expensive (Tonerider classic blues SSS).
Obviously, even a guitar you build to your exact specs cannot ever be the perfect guitar, even if you get everything perfect. For example, I have 3 single coils in mine but there are obviously going to be times I wish I had a humbucker in the bridge position, or it have it wired differently (there are so many options - mine is classic wiring), or have a guitar with hot P90ās (I dream of having a Yamaha Revstar Standard with P90ās). But for sure, itās an enormous pleasure to play a guitar you built yourself and are 100% happy with and if it makes you play more then its a good thing.
When itās truly complete, I will post a NGD post with some professional quality photos.
Now I read your other post! What a beauty! I bet youāll have fun with your build for a long time to come!
Like you say, pickups make quite a difference. In my own build, I want to strive for versatility. Maybe a switchable single/-dual coil, or some electronics magic. I once read something from a very knowlegdeable person (some german guy who also sells guitar circuits) and it sounded like you could have all the sounds you wanted in one guitar, but I didnāt understand everything he said. And his circuits needed a battery, Iām not sure if I want that.
