Humidifying Guitars and Not Knowing Why

I was reading on another forum about humidifying your guitar and some of the answers shocked me so I thought I’d ask here. Maybe shed some light on when and why you humidify guitars. Do you humidify your guitar because someone on the internet say you needed to? Do you know why you should or shouldn’t humidify you guitar? Do you own a hygrometer or even know what it is?
