Guitar Learning: Mental vs Physical Challenges

I’m in the same boat. Picked the guitar up at age 60 8 months ago after playing through college. Started at the beginning of Justin’s lessons and found I learned a lot of things wrong back then.

Found reading Gary Marcus’ book called Guitar Zero really helpful. He’s a cognitive scientist who picked up guitar in his 40s.

As everyone else said, yes, this is completely normal, and I struggle with this as well. I would love to just pick up things as effortlessly as I remember from my youth, but alas, that’s not how it is for me anymore. I’ve found that concentrating on myself helps a lot, and celebrating what I already can do by looking back on my Learning Log from time to time.

Do you have someone to play with? Because that also helped me a lot. It feels so much more like making music than just learning stuff when you accompany someone else, and that helps me a lot. And it makes picking up things also easier, since I’m not just doing it for myself anymore.

As for pro players or teachers, like everyone said, they’re pros for a reason. I don’t make my money with playing, so I get to learn at my own pace, which I see kind of as a luxury in our fast-moving times^^
