Hello Don from Missoula Montana. 67 yr old beginner

Over 40 years ago I read a book whose premise is that if you have a normal nervous system you are already wired to play music. They used the analogy of running. It take effort to get better at it and you might be in the front of the pack or the back of the pack but you can still enjoy yourself and get better at it.
I was in the military at the time in a job that allowed be some free time so 40 years ago I took up the saxophone for a couple of years but when I had to go back to my regular job and working all the time didn’t have time to practice and gave it up.
After I retired I got a AE-30 wind synth and have been playing it for the last two years. I learned to read music and play some piano also. I thought no time like the present so I bought an Ibanez electric guitar and have been using Justin Guitar.
Got a long way to go but I have the rest of my life to work on it. Look forward to further adventures in music.

Welcome Donald

Welcome. I also started on guitar at age 67, and I’m still here 8 years later. Oddly enough, the only other instrument I ever played was alto saxophone in 4th and 5th grade!

Greetings from Warsaw, Poland, Don
Welcome to the community. I’ll turn 72 this year and still learning… I truly believe that acquiring knowledge on playing such an awesome instrument as the guitar is a lot of fun, and also brings huge amounts of satisfaction when even a humblest goal is achieved. Good luck!

Welcome Don!

I analogize my guitar journey with running quite often. There are many great parallels, but one truth remains: playing guitar is a lot more complicated than running, now matter how much of a running geek you are! :running_woman: :athletic_shoe: :guitar: :notes:
I’ve also learned that I probably have more natural running talent than guitar-playing talent. Which isn’t saying much! Still, both are all about the fun and camaraderie…

Hi Don ,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :sunglasses:
Greetings,Rogier

Welcome to the forum Don. You found a great place to do the above! Since everyone is baring their soul here, I’ll hit 67 in a few months, and played the trumpet in my teens. I never heard anyone say, “Hey, why don’t you break out your trumpet and play something so we can sing along?”

Be sure to check out the Old Dawgs thread. It’s where Justin stores his old, crusty students like us.

Welcome, Don.
Like you, I started my guitar journey when I was 67. I am now within a month of turning 71. Justin and group have made the journey extremely pleasant. I never dreamed I would be able to play at the level I am playing now (not that I play all that well, but my wife likes it).
Music, and guitar specifically, enhances my health, keeping the hands more flexible and the mind nimbler. At least that is what I tell myself :slightly_smiling_face:

Great stuff, welcome to the community

Hi Don, welcome to the community forum. I started Justin Guitar again at the age of 67, but I had 40 years of experience as a beginning guitarist. You doing the right thing thinking of it as a journey, rather than a sprint. You can enjoy learning guitar for the rest of your life, because there is always something else that you can learn. I hope you have fun learning songs that you enjoy playing.

Hello Don.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the community etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
