Hello Col.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. There a whole host of golden oldies over in the dog house.
Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.

Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard

Welcome to the group! Those first few things of learning guitar and thinking you will never figure it out comes with the territory. Just stick with it and give it focused discipline and it will come. When I first started, the D chord was my worst enemy, eventually the F-Chord became the new D-Chord, now learning music theory is the new F-Chord, it keeps going, but that is also the most rewarding part of playing. When you do conquer it, it feels like you climbed Mount Everest.

Welcome in and here is to a great and happy 2026!

Thank you Richard for the advice and links here. I will be sure to have a good look around and make full use of the site as best as possible. I tried to reply but I had to wait several hours as blocked on my first day all good now though I hope.

Welcome Col …still finding my way around here myself. Started 2 months ago and slowly, (very) slowly getting the hang of things playing (or should I say making some sort of noise) acoustic. Probably the most enjoyable frustrations I’ve ever experienced :face_with_diagonal_mouth:… Determined at 60 and I will say it does get better; and like with most hobbies, the more you put in to it the more you get out of it…Enjoy the journey!

Hello Col and welcome! Be prepared…really a lot in the guitar journey is
exactly what you describe about your fingers; I like to think of it as a journey to self-awareness and self-discovery! I know the beginning can be a bit painful, don’t put too much pressure on yourself and enjoy the learning :slightly_smiling_face:

Then it will start becoming 2nd nature. Wait till the frustrations of the first little bit of learning a new instrument are over and you will have new frustrations, but the muscle memory of, I did this before, and I can do it again takes over, and you will be rolling at that point. Just buckle in for a long journey, but a rewarding one.
