I’ve bought a 3/4 size for my kids 30 years ago. They didn’t pick it up. I’d dreamed of playing guitar, grew up playing woodwinds, even had a cheap guitar once. But it was a disaster, terribly set up, impossible to play, no mentor, no apps… gave up after a few months ) I picked up the kids’ guitar and learned some open chords and some easy songs (avoiding bar chords totally for years.) Wouldn’t dream of playing in front of anyone.
Fast forward 20 years, pandemic, got a nice Taylor 300 series, found Justin. OMG. Life changer. How to practice, how to make the big step of performing for others (alone, then with metronome, then video tape it, then perform for others.) “Practice makes permanent so Practice perfect”
I’m totally addicted to Justin World. And now I found the Community! I am a bit all over the place with theory and blues and strumming technique, and all of the new songs to try! But what total fun.
I’m retired and guitar has become a big part of my life. Still playing mostly for myself, and occasionally family and friends (thanks for the inspiration Justin!) Playing and singing. Boomer stuff mostly, with some new stuff.
There’s a ton of helpful information at your fingertips here… just search for an issue & it’s probably been discussed/dissected before! Or, ask & ye shall receive all kinds of kind, encouraging help & info!
Good luck with your playing & always Keep it FUN!!!

P.S. My family was in Bellingham a few years back… my son was getting married to a Canadian girl in Vancouver & we stopped in Bellingham to gas up before crossing the border. I remember a quaint small-town feel & nice people, beautiful scenery & a lovely drive! I also remember the memorial park at the border crossing dedicated to the friendship between our two nations… good memories!
Oh, one other thing… if you haven’t noticed it before, there’s a Discussion tab in Justin’s lessons that, when clicked, takes you here. Often, the banter about that particular lesson reveals more/better ideas about the lesson in question! Try it!
Hello Neill.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. https://community.justinguitar.com/categories
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the community etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
Hi Richard,
It was following a link in comments from you in the Theory class that got me over here in the community! Been fully immersed in the world of Justinguitar for a while, but the community is new to me. Holy smokes, so much awesome content.
You can feel the passion. Keep up the good work!
Welcome to the community Neill! I started guitar when I retired as well. It’s a great way to keep the brain cells firing while having fun. Maybe you can join in on an open mic someday soon.
Hi Neill, welcome to the community forum. Justin provides a great path to follow in your guitar journey, to help you feel like you are going forward even while you explore a lot of styles and guitar techniques. Have fun playing guitar in retirement.
