Hello from Peter (a JustinGuitar returner) in Sweden, EU!

Welcome back. I wish you good luck. Justin’s site is amazing from the community to the lessons to the songs. Justin is such a great teacher.

Also that is one nice looking guitar! I’m using an acoustic so far.

Sorry to hear about your thumb problems. Yes surely that makes things difficult. We are all equipped with very different hands. My wife has a very good Hungarian music education and did win a lot of competitions when she was young but she has a small hand a it is difficult enough to reach from to next C so it ended her musical career. You can’t play Liszt or Rachmaninov with that ! However I can easily reach C to next E but I don’t have the coordination skills for the piano.
When I was young a friend who was a good piano player introduced me to music theory on the piano an I am since convinced it the best way to understand theory. Thus Peter you have a big advantage there ! Regarding the thumb how do you use it ? Maybe too much pressure from the back ? I find that now when I am older I do much prefer to use my thumb “the Hendrix way” i.e. over the top of the neck and not for pressuring the bar chords. For the E-shape bar chords I don’t use the thumb but always for the A-shape for dampening the E-string. You can also play “John Lennon way” i.e. play a moveable C dom 7 with the Root on the A string and dampen the E string with the thumb as well as dampening the high E with the p finger. By the way where in Sweden are you ?

Thank you for good advice! Need all the help I can get…

And yes - the piano keyboard layout is definately childs play compared to the guitar fretboard layout. At least for a beginner musician. Like you I can easily reach an octave on piano and a nine. But I see the problem your wife must have. There are stories of professional pianists (Monk?) who is said to have had the skin between their fingers cut for better reach. Nothing to recommend though, if you ask me…

And just like you (?) I’m living in Uppsala.

Hi Peter,

my e-mail is in my profile but it is on Lars Johansson (First name but my whole name is Lars Kenneth). For some reason I seemed to just have typed in Lars. I don’t have your email and it may be wise not to publish it on this forum. So if you find my mail you can just send me a mail [mod edit - phone number removed for privacy reasons]

Hello Peter.
Welcome back to JustinGuitar and the Community. I’m arriving late to your welcome party. You’re now a couple of months further along - how are you getting on learning with Justin’s fantastic lessons and resources? And how is the Yamaha? I had a Yamaha SG and a Yamaha acoustic for years and years, loved them both.
You probably already know that there are many good folk here who will happily offer help and encouragement to those coming up behind them on Justin’s Beginner Courses. They embody and carry the pay-it-forward ethos we have nurtured for many years in our community. There are many old hands too who have years and (hopefully) a bit of wisdom they can bring as they give their support to those hitting the road blocks - which we all do.
Just ask if you need anything else.
Cheers
