Hello I'm Emil from Montreal

Welcome to the Forum here!

If you follow Justin’s course it takes you through a bunch of different musical styles though he definitely does lean towards Blues and like 70-90s rock.

Best of Luck!

Hi Emil,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :sunglasses:

Well that’s easy if you ask the most here ( without knowing anything about your level, maybe a little too far back (?) ) But,
Start at the beginning and if you have a decent beginner level you will fly through the first dozen lessons, but the few extra tricks that will be new to you can make a world of difference later… from Grade 4 you can, if desired a much more specialized path … or not and just continue per lesson and do every module …

The most important thing is to stay motivated and keep it fun

Greetings,Rogier

Hi Emil, and welcome! As Rogier @roger_holland suggests, start at the beginning of Justin’s lessons, even if you already know most of the material. You’ll pick up some great tips, and will understand Justin’s approach. Regarding private lessons: I had tried that as well…after some time with Justin’s curriculum I was better able to understand what I want in a teacher. Hopefully that will happen for you too! As for your musical interests - rock and metal - I think you’ll find good company here.

Welcome aboard the Crazy Train. Its a amazing program and place to learn to play guitar. This is a solid community which you have found. I came in all about rock and punk amd I learned so much more. Make sure you learn song that are not in that style. You we gain clues to help you play everything. And listen to our veteran guitar players. They have great advice.

I was at a live show a few months back and Mike Ness from social Distortion said to the Audience

“Blues is the Teacher and Punk is the Preacher”

Glad you found Justin’s

Bienvenue Emil!

Even if you’re mostly interested in Rock and Metal, I think a base of standard guitar lessons will help you later. Probably, there are lessons somewhere on the internet focusing on Rock/Metal, but on the other hand Justin is such an amazing teacher, you’ll probably see after some lessons.

I also landed here when I was not at zero in my guitar journey, but decided to start at the beginnig in case I had missed something important in my learning beforehand.

While continuing Justin’s course, I did themed vacations on certain topics that I felt were fun, here or on other sites, but always went back to continue where I left in this course. For me this worked very well.
When on your “Dashboard” you can search for topics you want to learn amd very probably something will come up.

I wish you lots of fun,
Dominique

Hello Emil & Welcome!
I agree with the advice you’ve received above… start at lesson 1 & move through them even though there may be a lot of things you already know…
Learn songs - even though many of the songs included in the lessons and/or suggested song lists may not be your preferred genre. They will help you to build your guitar foundation and will help you to hone your skills. Many techniques/habits developed in Grade 1 & Grade 2 will apply to any type of music.
This Community is a great resource, if you have questions, you can often find the answer by searching the site & if not found there, ask… lots of responses will be forthcoming!
Good luck in your guitar Journey, most importantly, KEEP IT FUN!!!

Bienvenu Emil,

I rather suspect that many of your old skills will return.
Same/similar experience with 1 on 1.
I’m new to this in a 65 year old body.
I really like Justin’s pedagogical style. It works for me.

Any questions that come up for you guitar-wise and you can search the forum, and if nothing is found, post a question. A bunch of generous, very knowledgeable folks here eager to help you on your voyage.

Jason, that is such a great quote! I’m going to print it out big and put it in my guitar room as inspiration.

Hi Emil, welcome to the community forum.

Hi Emil, bienvenue. Good you restarted your guitar journey. Your rock and metal playing can benefit greatly from reviewing all the lessons from the beginning and build a solid foundation of guitar skills even if that involves giving a try to play other genres that do not motivate you the most. Many of the skills are common to many genres. You can check meanwhile if a song or artist you are interested Justin has made a lesson for it. Justin lessons will also help you to take advantage of any other resources around, including rock and metal specific tutorials and methods and distinguish which of this resources are useful for you and their content is accurate and makes sense. Have fun.

Hello Emil  Welcome to the community !

Exactly true, if you follow the grade system (grade 1, grade 2, grade 3), you will get the skills needed to play rock and metal.

For instance, Justin has a cool rock songbook and we are a few members that started a project to play all the songs in it Math07 JG Rock Songbook Project (11 out of 15) - 1 NEW song

And some others did the same with a metal songbook AlexisDuprey - Troy Stetina’s Metal Rhythm Guitar Vol.1 - Songs 1-6

Souds like lots of fun, next i think ill go and upgrade the app for the paid version, looks like there is lots to discover and learn
