Hello everyone, I’m Tom and live in Colorado. I decided a few years ago that music was going to be my mid life crisis “thing” and have been playing bass for about 18 months now. I did a course similar to this one and have had a lot of luck and fun this whole time. I’d like to eventually find a band to play with.
I’ve stayed active with that community and a few months ago was approached to see if I wanted to beta test their new guitar program. I jumped at the chance, bought myself a Yamaha Revstar and off I went. I’ve finished the program and looking for more instruction, so here I am. Its been more challenging than bass was to learn (I feel that my lead technique benefitted greatly from bass though) but I’m loving the challenge and almost being able to call myself a multi instrumentalist.
Hi Tom @faydout, welcome to the Community! I’m confident you’ll find plenty of material here. I understand you just finished a (beginner, I presume) guitar course. Still, you might find it’s worth your time to go through Justin’s course from the beginning. You’ll likely speed through it, but the bonus for you will be experiencing a different teaching approach. Also, you may find material not included in the other course. Finally - Justin’s content tends to build on itself, so it’s useful to see what came before. Whether or not you decide to do that, I look forward to seeing you around the community!
Good evening, I started on beginner grade 2 which still feels like its stepping back quite a bit. Justin explains a few things slightly differently than the other program and the 2 combined help to give a fuller picture. I’m hoping that he spends a good amount of time working us on chord transitions and barre chords. Right now, I can play most chord shapes that I’ve learned shakes fist at B but transitioning from chord to chord quickly is still a weak area. Same with barre chords, I can play them but I need time to get my fingers set properly. I’m phappy to be here and hopefully I can end up being helpful.
Since I started guitar a couple of years ago but was thinking of trying the bass, I would be interested to know what course you followed. I really need a well structured course. I’m not one of those people who picks things up easily.
Enjoy this new part of your mid-life crisis and just so you know, if you get hooked it will be a journey for the rest of your life.
Thank you for the welcome. I started with the bassbuzz course. It might be even more structured than Justin’s, very similar layout though. After that I’ve worked through some of the courses at TalkingBass. Less structured but a lot more detailed.
The music that I listen to and want to play are entirely guitar driven (shoegaze, post punk, post hardcore). It’s likely bass will always be my main instrument but I’d love to go nuts with the reverb and fuzz and crank out some My Bloody Valentine someday. Even if it’s just in my basement.
Heck yeah it would. Probably bass for me though. I’m way more comfortable on that for the time being.
Thanks. Lots of people recommended BassBuzz. Seems like the one to go for. I’m still a long way off starting bass as I want to get more proficient with guitar first. Thanks for the help.
