Hi from Mark in Perth, Western Australia

Hi all!

Many years ago I had a few friends in bands, but could only enjoy the music from the floor rather than the stage. A little change came when, in looking after a good friend’s apartment, I had access to his lovely ash-body strat and a ‘fake book’ for learning songs. A little later, Brian May’s excellent ‘Soap Box’ forum mentioned a great online guitar teacher with a pay-it-forward philosophy that impressed ‘Bri’, and Justin Guitar entered my life!

Since then I have run through the Classic Beginner course a couple of times and the Intermediate course once, and thoroughly enjoyed the journey. This led to renting a practice room to play with beginner friends: a few songs of pop-rock and grunge, but what fun when we finished at the same time! Sadly for me, the band played their first open mic the month after I’d left for extended overseas fieldwork and then switched home cities.

Since then I’ve had sporadic jam buddies but still haven’t managed to play (and try to sing) outside that setting. I’m mostly working towards having a small handful of songs so I could play casually at a campfire or sit in with experienced musicians. I’ve just started the Blues Immersion Prep and Practical Music Theory 1 to 3, but time will be tight: I will be doing some live sessions at 4am in railway camps in outback Australia. Perhaps a good setting for the Blues….!

I might end by saying I really appreciate the style and tone of the Justin Guitar Experience, and hope to contribute only kindly and helpful things (if a little rarely!).

G’day Mark, welcome to the community, a few aussies are active here. always good to have one more. If you decide to venture into the acoustic guitar scene, Perth has a very active folk community, have some friends who are into that. We visited Perth 2 and a bit years ago while doing the big lap and went along to one event, it was great fun. Look forward to hearing more from you.

Hello Mark.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space.
https://community.justinguitar.com/categories

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the community etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

ps

we host virtual open mics as part of the JG Community!

Thanks Richard… I see what you did there, and at the time of New Year’s Resolutions!

I’m expecting BLIM Unit 1 to keep me busy in the immediate future, but might get back to you…

Hi Tony, I followed up your comment about Perth Folk Clubs and found a couple of organisations doing monthly or bi-weekly events, quite informal and often at community bowling clubs. I’ve seen friends play at this type of venue, but not found the live music clubs themselves, My work means I’ll miss the first two events, but I’ll follow up for sure. Thanks Tony!!
