So, I’m 36 and I have wanted to learn how to play guitar since I was a teenager!
I did have a Yamaha Pacifica 20+ years ago, a Christmas present but what I didn’t have was the patience, motivation and guidance to get through the initial stages of trying to learn to play. Of course it was hard but I didn’t help my self just trying to learn tabs. I lost interest pretty quick and that was that.
Fast forward a few years, my subconscious desire to play guitar was reignited when I discovered the Andertons YouTube channel but self doubt kept me from spending money I didn’t really have and that didn’t change until recently.
I have felt a little lost the last couple of years, I have bugger all in the way of a social life and my spare time is spent watching rubbish on TV, I don’t have any hobbies and felt like I spent my time away from work, waiting around to go back to work. How sad!
Well, Andertons came back up in my recommended feed and I got the itch again, then the topic of Justin’s online courses came up and I decided that I should give it a proper go. So here I am eagerly awaiting my new guitar and hoping I can stay the course, it’s going to be tough but this time I’m hoping I am mental prepared to take on the challenge.
Welcome to the forum Dan.
Justin is the best online teacher on the forum is here for moral suport and help from other students. Good luck on your guitar journey
You are lucky to have found Justin Guitar…
There is SO much information available to beginner guitarists nowadays (not all of it is so great) - Justin’s method is the BEST I’ve found on the web. If you start at the very beginning, practice faithfully (at least 10-30 minutes EVERY DAY without fail) you will be playing songs almost immediately!!! 2 chord songs maybe - but you will be making actual music!!! It’s so exciting to be on this adventure with Justin ruddering the ship for you & this Community available for when you have things that you are having a difficult time figuring out!
Best of luck to you on your Journey!!!

p.s. I almost forgot - I always recommend to new guitar players (yes, you are going to be a guitar player/guitarist from day one - it’s ok to call yourself that too!!! ) to purchase a stand or wall hanger for your new instrument. It keeps the guitar handy, you can pick it up when you have a few spare minutes… I like to play chord changes or scales while the coffee’s brewing in the morning & everyone else is still sleeping!!!
Keep it FUN!!!
Good for you!! Kinda like you, I had a guitar when i was 15-16 but didn’t stick with it. Fast forward to now. I’m 63, just picked up a guitar & a friend suggested Justin Guitar. Here I am always wanted to play & about 10 weeks in now. I’ve decided I don’t care how slow I am, I am going to learn regardless how long it takes. I’m loving it now. Good to you for going for it. Wish you the best!!! Go for it!!! Enjoy!!
Hey Dan, welcome to the forum. Maintaining momentum for the first month or two is certainly challenging but keep in mind the reward is so very worth it. For me I made sure I practiced EVERY day for 15 minutes. At the start, the steel strings (acoustic) hurt so bad I could only play for 5 minutes so I did that 3 times every day. Soon my fingers toughened up. Look forward to hearing more from you,
You’re in very good company here, we are all in the same learners boat! With Justin as online teacher, you are set to overcome the first initial doubt phase of early learning quite soon.
I wish you loads of fun and joy learning and exploring guitar land.
Hi Dan,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun
And with that (fun) in mind this
I would like to highlight. You have found the best online teacher with the best community where help can be found immediately (says everyone who also looks in other places)… never it couldn’t be easier to learning guitar as I see it and is not a struggle or something with time pressure…(oke this is not how everyone thinks about it, but it’s just a guitar, right?) …okay you have to bite through the sensitive fingertips for the first few weeks, but I even liked that…it is…as Justin so nicely says…an initiation ritual
Thanks once again for all the warm welcomes. It’s nice to hear so much positivity. Today is bitter sweet, my guitar has arrived and she’s a beaut! But I crashed my car this morning, can never just have a good day
Oh dear Dan sometimes the universe has a warped sense of humor. I hope your car suffered only cosmetic damage! I guess you’ll be looking for something to take your mind off that — oh, hey, you have a new guitar to explore, and lessons to begin!!!
A comment from a fellow beginner: you didn’t mention whether your new guitar has been “set up”. If not, it will be worth your time and the relatively small cost to take your new friend to a reputable dealer (like Anderton’s) and have that done. A well-set up guitar is easier to play, and goodness knows guitar is difficult enough without adding unnecessary challenges!
Hope to see you around.
Edited to add: Oops. Sorry, I just re-read your original post…you’re still waiting for your new guitar. Aaarrggh! Second edit - I clearly need more coffee!
No no, my guitar arrived today. You should still get more coffee though, one can never have enough coffee!
I will absolutely consider taking it for a proper set up, I’m sure it’s something that could be done by myself but as I’m very much a novice, professional help seems wise.
As for the car, it was a low speed bump, it’s repairable, nobody was injured it’s just inconvenient.
Hi, it’s nice to meet you here. I fully understand your enthusiasm towards playing the guitar and wish you all the best in your endeavour.
It’s a beautiful guitar! Congrats on your purchase; I’m sure you’ll enjoy playing it in the years to come. Getting a new instrument is often something that encourages the owner to play and play and play Have it set up properly, as typically that’s what a newly acquired guitar needs.
Good luck!
