Hi, Sheryl from Vancouver Canada

Hi all, i have tried to learn guitar most of my adult life, I am 70 now.
I have been on many guitar sites with many instructors. I have tried most of the
online sites with varying small degrees of success. I have stumbled on some great ones but there always seems a disconnect next between my current playing level and .the next step that I need to take.I have been a member of Justin’s site for several years as well as with another half dozen sites. I had no idea that Justin’s site has so many features and information. I am still having trouble figuring everything out but dropping the other sites and keeping Justin!’s and one other where I am a member.!Hope everyone is doing well! Excited to move on in my guitar journey!

Wish you loads of fun learning guitar!

Welcome to the forum. Justin’s stuff is very good. It gave me the head start I needed over 10 years ago and I’ve never regretting sticking to it. The reward is so cool.

Hi Sheryl,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :sunglasses:

Greetings,Rogier

Hi Sheryl, welcome to the community forum. I can relate to the frustration you have experienced over the years. I had similar experiences over the last 50 years. You have made the correct choice in focusing on Justin’s course of study. Even though I had completed Justin’s classic beginners course 10 years ago, I started again at grade 1 and focused on improving my bad habits, reading all the posts with questions for each of the new lessons on the website and finally spending more time learning songs and not just playing technical exercises. By the time you get through grade 3, you will learn some much about the best ways to structure your practice that will prepare you to put all the frustration in the past. Have fun playing the guitar.

Welcome to the forum Sheryl.

Guess that’s one of the reason that this is a great place to learn. Sounds like you have bee dipping in and out of a lot of material and from that I’d guess not much in the way of direction or pathway ? Could be wrong, I did like wise for close on a couple of decades.

So I’d second what @SteveL_G99 said and start at the beginning, follow the bouncy ball, get used to the structure and when you start learning stuff that’s new to you, you will have found your level and can build from there.

BTW Never too old to rock n roll !

Hi Sheryl,

Welcome to the community forum. :grinning:

Welcome, Sheryl!! Enjoy the ride!!!

Hello Sheryl & Welcome!!!

This :point_up_2:

My first experience with Justin was after a couple of decades of wandering (and wondering) with guitar method books, instructional DVDs, listening to advice from other guitar players etc…

Initially when starting out with Justin, I dove into the materiel at about Module 12… I was fairly certain that I knew EVERYTHING prior to Power Chords… then after cruising around here in the Community for a while & seeing a lot of advice for newcomers to Justin’s lessons to start at Grade 1 & at least watch/listen to all the videos… I didn’t know what I didn’t know…

Good luck with everything!!!

Hello Sheryl.
Where Justin’s differs from and surpasses other online instructors, is that he makes his free content (and 99% of it is free) the all-important structured beginner courses that follow step-by-step and allow people to learn in a correct manner. It is not random video content with a push to the paid content.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the community etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
