How do you clean your guitar?

@jkahn Ha, boy, Iā€™m from Bavaria, we are beer experts over here! And donā€™t tell anybody: I like beer! Simply not on guitars  Maybe I put one in the fridge for your upcoming event on Saturday?

You DO NOT polish a dirty guitar. Did any one notice the only dirt on that guitar was a little dust on the back and He said you want to take it off before you polish it because it will scratch the finish.

Always clean your guitar first. You DO NOT use polish to clean a dirty guitar.

Also how do you clean the fretboard if the strings are in the way? This might be a dumb question :upside_down_face: but i might as well ask

I use a kit from ā€œCareful with that axeā€ guitar care kit for body and fret board. I try to change my strings out every 6 months and clean my baby up at that time.

I do all that when I change strings.

Another reason to learn bends!

What are bends?

I just slide a microfibre cloth underneath. Or you can do it when you decide to change strings. But I sweat so, I usually wipe off the guitar often.

String bending to change the pitch of a fretted note higher.

ā€¦ Eugene? As in the Pink Floyd song? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::joy:

To get the best sound out of your guitar you should change the strings at least once each 6 months, and itā€™s very easy to clean the fretboard and around the bridge at the same time. If you play your guitar a lot (1 hr or more a day), you may even want to change strings on a monthly basis or even more often.

:thinking:I once saw a video of a dude cleaning the strings while they were still on the guitar. He got a cloth and dragged it on the string up and down to clean the string. Are u supposed to do that or is it just better to not

I wipe down my strings immediately after Iā€™m done playing, every time.

Has anyone here tried one of these?

String cleaner

To that end I just use a microfibre cloth and my hands immitate the fancy plastic thing of that gadget. Less costly way I presume. :joy:
The thing is that the gadget has a finite thickness so when you slide it up, I doubt it can go further down the 5th fret.
On the contrary, with just the cloth, I can squeeze it as far as the 1st fret, without detuning beforehand.
Also, I wouldnā€™t want the plastic going over my frets scratching them or worse.

Hi Chris,
No, have not tried the one shown, but Music Nomad sell something similar that is hand held and works for me. It also has a soft brush which is useful. Actually Music Nomad produce very good stuff, though it can be pricey.

Interesting post. I needed to clean my neck and adjust string action. (Something wrong with my bends).
WOW what a difference. I used windex multipurpose cleaner then pledge dusting spray for polish. And changed strings
What a difference. Iā€™m still debating if my $160 squire strat is worth bringing to luthier for proper set up.
Any recommendations?

what is your fret board made of? if itā€™s baked maple your OK with pledge. If it rosewood Never use Pledge on a guitar with raw wood fret board.

A proper set up will improve any guitar no matter what the guitar costs. You could also learn how to do it yourself. Itā€™s really not that hard on an electric.
