@Richard_close2u I really feel like this is a silly question, but the strumming confuses me immensely. I am on Grade 1 and just finished Module 3. We have gone over the strumming patterns for The Old Faithful and another one for mostly strumming down and there being one up strum. I understand the pattern and I can play it alternating with the Am and Em chords the lesson suggested, but I don’t understand how to translate that pattern into other songs, Song of the South by Alabama is the first one that comes to mind. I currently have the Lessons app and can see that it shows the Old Faithful strumming pattern, but I guess the question is if I should be strumming constantly? Maybe? I really don’t know how to even word it. I have been playing along with the app so far and doing a down strum each time the chord changes and I see the bubble with the letter in it. Should I be strumming all through the colored line? I know this is probably a simple answer, but I really just don’t understand how to do it. Thank you for all your help!

The recommended pattern for Song Of The South by Alabama in the App is:
They are all close in style but different enough to need some concentration.
What needs even more concentration is that Song Of The South has chord changes during the bars on different beats. It is not always one chord for one whole bar.
In the App, a new chord is obvious, visually. Its name is placed in a large circle. The other circles indicate how the bar is split up rhythmically. Large circles are the main beats, the pulse, the 1, 2, 3, 4. Smal lcircles are the 8ths in-between, the off-beats, the & counts.
In this diagram the bar contains two chords.
The chord A starts on beat 1, it changes to E on beat 3. The large circle soon after A is beat 2. the large circle soon after E is beat 4. The small circles are all & counts, off-beats.
In this image the bar contains two chords but they do not each last half a bar.
D comes on beat 1 and last for three beats (there are two large circles following indicating beats 2 and 3). The chord A does not arrive until beat 4. Again, the small circles are off-beats.
In both instances, and all other bars of the song, you can use the 1 _ 2 & 3 & 4 _ pattern. Like this.

I understand your frustration! This was one of my early frustrations, as I was encountering songs with chord changes mid-measure before anyone addressed how to handle it.
One way I’ve seen people handle it is they change their rhythm. Maybe they simplify such that they just play quarter note downstrums. Maybe they just break up the strum pattern and start the pattern fresh with the chord change. Or maybe they do something else entirely.
Seems to me like switching to quarter note downstrums here would be level 1. at least this is how I think I’ve seen other people handle it. And that doing the change mid-pattern (but keeping the same pattern) might be Level 2? Not sure about that. other choices maybe above that, and which you use probably depends more on what feels best for the song you’re playing.

I have now bookmarked the Strumming Machine page so I can practice with that, but I unfortunately do not have the funds currently to afford the Strumming SOS. I knew that something was wrong, I just couldn’t figure it out. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This makes so much more sense now. I had tried many years ago to learn guitar using some how-to books, but none of them ever actually explained how you strum the guitar. That lack of explanation made learning so much more difficult than it needed to be and I gave up. I found Justin’s app a few months ago and decided I would give it a try again. Needless to say, I am so grateful I found him and this community. You all are amazing and I appreciate you so much.
