I am back. My name is Trevor and I have the itch to learn again

A few years ago I tried to learn the guitar and did pretty well, I think. But, my ADHD got the best of me and I lost interest and stopped playing. I am back at it again. I have a few new strategies to help form lasting habits, I am really hoping that this time around the guitar sticks.

I am looking forward to joining the community and sharing in the struggle and the joys of playing guitar.

Best,
Trevor

Welcome Trevor! I don’t have personal experience with ADHD, but will say this: Justin’s program provides continuous, well-paced learning, with an emphasis on enjoying your self. It seems to me that should help with the AD part of ADHD. And this community is a great resource when we all inevitably find ourselves bored, frustrated, or otherwise stuck. Hope to see you around!

Hello Trevor & Welcome!

I think one of the best things that you can do is to get a stand or wall hanger for your guitar- that way it’s so easy to pick it up & play when you only have a few minutes to play! I like to play while the coffee is brewing in the morning! Also, it’s a reminder to practice as well as that guitars are beautiful & enhance the rooms they “live” in!!!
Also remember that the more you practice & play, the better you get. The better you get, the more fun you have! The more fun you have means you play more which means the better you get which equals more fun…… I’ll just stop there!!!
Good luck & keep it Fun!!!

Having tried and failed and then tried again many years later I’d encourage you to keep the end result in mind. I can now pull songs out of my back pocket at will and play for an hour or more. It’s SO very rewarding. Hang in there, you’ll love the reward. And the great thing with ADHD is you can start playing one song, then jump to the chorus of another song, then jump to the verse of a completely different song and really make your ADHD sing!

Hi Trevor,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :sunglasses:

Now that you have found Justininguitar, there are no more excuses for not reaching a reasonable level of at least campfire guitar playing and a little above that  :sunglasses:

Welcome back I can relate to the the ADHD I have a Son who also has this so good luck on your returning journey for him if I could keep him interested he would stick with it but if it was just repetitive no chance.

Wishing you good success  :+1:

You and Ahhnold—

Newbie here: as @Richard_close2u emphasizes, find songs and play along.
It is extremely gratifying. If you’ve purchased the JustingGuitar App, you have over 1500 songs to play along with at variable speeds, many with vocals, all (I think) with a backing track, almost all with lyrics. If slowing down the backing track is a desire (while mostly keeping the pitch) there are a number of other options out there if you don’t have the JustinGuitar app.

I found that when I was doing lots of exercises (to the exclusion of playing songs), my enthusiasm tended to wane. But as I picked songs out to get better at, it was more of an immediate draw (rather than I’ll be glad, in the future, that I did this). Interestingly, (or not) I am most drawn to the songs important to me 50 years ago.

Welcome back–you can make the guitar a comforting place that draws you in with a loving embrace.

@Richard_close2u
I do remember it! Super surprised that you remember it. Good memory on you!

Lucky for me a lot of the chords are still in muscle memory… I just wish the calluses I had built up would have remained. hah!

I don’t expect to be as active as I was back then. One of the things I have learned is that I have to be careful of hyperfixation. While having the ability to look back and see the progress I made week after week sure is cool, I don’t plan on doing the same this time around. The goal will be more like once a month rather than once a week. - The goal is to try and be normal about the hobby, hahaha.

Thanks again,
Trevor

@tjc Hey Trevor fantastic to see you back and playing again.

Tried replying yesterday but got locked out by whatever maintenance was going on.

Just ease your self into things and take your own sweet time. As always plenty of advice on hand when needed, some of it even good
