I Hope I Don't Fall in Love With You

Hi everyone,

Trying a Tom Waits favorite of mine on for size. First video post from me outside BLIM. I would love some constructive criticism, but I’ve always been scared of singing in public so please be gentle

Anyway, here it is…

This is so very beautifully played and sung Petter, a real treat to my ears! I loved the way you used the dynamics.
Please, don’t be scared of singing in public, you sing really well

That was great, Petter. Really well done! I thought you sang very well. Totally understand that it’s scary, but you sound really good.

Superb rendition of a great song. Your accompaniment is excellent: the combination of picks and strums, and as Silvia noted, the dynamics, serve the song well. Your voice could be a little louder in the mix - you sing well!

Bravo, Petter, well done on taking the plunge.

A fine rendition, I am not a huge listener to Waits, but I sense you did justice to the song and it suited you well. Good idea to pick a favourite that you know well. Your play and singing sounded good to my ears, without any need to be gentle, so to speak.

What I would suggest is look at the way in which you recorded and produced the video. The overall level of the audio is quite low. So plenty of headroom to raise the gain on your interface or boost in post production.

Look forward to your next.

Ooh, love it. Very nice rendition. Loved the guitar. Your singing is also very good, but too quite. If you improve balance on the recording it’d be a banger.

I love Tom Waits. The first album I heard was Blue Valentine, I was a kid back then and for some weird reason my favorite song of his till this day is Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis.

Good version Petter but I think it could be improved by upping the tempo a little and listening to the phrasing of the original. It all depends how close you want to make it to the original of course!

I enjoyed this, Petter. I like the genre. Impressive picking and strumming. And your vocals sound fine to me. I don’t think you need to worry about that, as others have said here. Nice to meet you and hope to hear from you again soon.

Well done Petter!

I remember we did BLIM3 together.
It takes courage to sing in front of others, and as with many things, it gets a bit easier every time you do it.

Constructive advice (not criticism): try to project your voice so as to reach (imaginary) people sitting at the end of a venue. You’ll find it’s easier to stay in control of your voice that way. Part of the reason for singing quietly is just being nervous and afraid of your own voice, which is normal.

Keep it up.

@Silvia80 @dfrazz @beejay56 @DavidP @remchi @sairfingers @pkboo3 @erionstrings wow, thanks so much, very happy you liked it! And I’m taking your cheers and pointers to heart :folded_hands:

Yes, it’s great!!!

This is very interesting for me, great tip, thanks!

And all though I’m trying to keep it simple recording wise, to keep focus on the playing, I certainly agree the “production value” could see some adjustments! I will play around with mic position and gain settings.

That was extraordinary, P_tt_r. Funny how we can watch so many videos of someone (you in this case) be constantly impressed, and then be totally amazed at how well they can sing too! I think a combination of some of the feedback was accurate here: the audio could be a bit louder, and you should have absolutely no fear of singing in public, or on a video for posting here. You are very talented in both areas, singing and playing. So let it all out.

Petter, that was really enjoyable! This is one of my favourite tunes, too, and you did it justice.

From BLIM 4, I know you can play, but also your singing sounds just fine and you definitely deliver the feeling of the song. You don’t need to shy away, but I get it feels scary. But it will get easier the more you do it and will give you more confidence each time. The better you feel, the better you will sound.

Keep them coming.

A lovely rendition of Tom Waits’ I Hope That I Don’t Fall in Love with You , Petter. Waits is one of those artists I have a lot of time for, so your recording is a timely reminder for me to spend some more time with his songs.

He crafts brilliant songs and has such a unique style as a performing artist too. Your performance is very, very good, and it’s clear you’ve absorbed a lot from the original and captured its character beautifully. Well done.

What a compliment! Your comments makes me very happy.

Yes, Waits it a legendary artist and performer, play those tunes!!

Hi Petter, don’t be!
I remember you from Blim and of course you play the acoustic very nicely too!
Your singing sounds really good! For myself it’s a similar story (lack of confidence), but I noticed singing and confidence still improves with more practice. (I could need much more practice, haha! )
And I like it best to practice in the car when no one can hear me!
So I take my playlist of possible guitar songs with me and a small zoom recorder to judge afterwards.

I really like the song too! I barely know Tom Waits’ songs, I should listen to some some “best of”.

Hope you’ll post more songs!
