Jhjennis February 2025 - 1st AVOYP - Imitation + While My Gently Weeps + Hey Joe + Crystal Ship

Father/Son project now…my son covered the drum track with me to record my cover of a 64’ surf classic by the Riviera’s “California Sun”… I did the guitar and a simple bass track.

Everyone probably knows the Hendrix version of Hey Joe…nostalgia day for me today…I decided to cover the old school Leaves garage band version I played back in the 60’s at frat houses our band used to play at…no vocals this time…my voice is shot.

Interesting, I must say, nothing I could expect as I don’t know the version you mention in your comment. However it’s always nice (and quite refreshing) to hear another approach to a well-known song.
I myself have recorded a few versions of Little Wing, also dissimilar to Jimi’s version. BTW, the chord progression in that song is one my favourite BTs for improvisation  I may upload a recording next month.
Yeah, that WAS cool… :+1:

Enjoyable to hear another version, Jim. Well played and produced.

Thanks for sharing that original version.

I also like the Deep Purple Mk I version

Thanks for your kind words, David…completely agree on the Deep Purple version…I heard Deep Purple play Hey Joe live in 1969 at a concert on the same bill with Iron Butterfly (who did a 20 minute version of In-a-gadda-da-vida!

Wow, that must’ve been some concert!

Hi

That really captures the 60s vibe.
Loving the bass.
Tones on the guitars have that vintage sound.

Digger

Thanks! …was played on my 67’ Telecaster & Fender Bass through an old school Fender Twin Reverb amp.

That was cool, I thought maybe it was a Tele and possibly a Fender Bass, not quite sure if it was a Precision or not! Great sound from the Fender Twin, I had one eons ago

Thanks! I love that old tank of an amp…It was the same setup I used in the cover of California Sun I did with my son playing drums.

Excellent! Well played! Love this song. I remember well the version by the Cryin’ Shames which is my favorite. Sounds very similar to what you played. Thank you!

Thanks for your kind words! I like the Cryin’ Shames version as well!

Experimenting with some finger style on the old Tele…a rough finger style guitar cover of the Doors “The Crystal Ship”

Very nice. I wanted to hear you sing it, too!

Nicely done. I hadn’t considered doing “While my guitar gently weeps” as a finger style, so I am definitely putting this on my list of songs for the future. The thumb bass progression in the song is clear and well balanced against the higher notes on the chords. You really pick up the details of the harmonies.

Thank you! Much appreciated!

Thanks…but you don’t want to hear me sing with my voice as it is now!
