JokuMuu - June 2023 - Tom Waits (Hold On - partial) + 7 Nation Army riff

@NicoleKKB

That’s what I had been hoping for. Cannot wait to get there. And here we are again with my main learning so far. I have to be more patient with myself.

@DonnatheDead

I absolutely agree. The only “in person” lessons I ever received were in group settings and it was next to impossible to give personalized feedback. The scheme of these lessons always was “Here is a new song. You should know the chords. If not, ask. Here is the preferred strumming pattern. Now let’s play the song together” :grinning:

Thus once again to everybody who has taken look at the video and given feedback. I was in such a rush that e.g. I did not make conscious decisions on how to hold the pick but just wanted to get through it as long as I still somehow remembered the progression of notes.

nice! do you practice with a metronome?

Let’s say, it was an adventure :slightly_smiling_face: Yes, I do. I didn’t with that one however :slightly_smiling_face:

Great job! Keep working on it and you’ll have this one down in no time :guitar:

It’s an amazing feeling when you can play something that people recognize. As some others have mentioned, Seven Nation Army is one of the best songs to work on as your skill level improves. You can easily up the difficulty level as you learn. Once you get to power chords, this one gets especially fun :wink:

Nicole, liked your Tom Waits song very much. Your progress is impressing, playing without looking, clean chord changes and singing at the same time, bravo! Your voice fits the song and you got the vibe! Concerning the timing - that’s a point you can easily improve, think it’s no problem for you. Keep on, you are doing great!

First of all, thanks to @Richard_close2u for the housekeeping :slightly_smiling_face:

@sairfingers

Thanks so much for your feedback :slightly_smiling_face: Oh, well… The visual level :rainbow: If you knew how much I dislike seeing myself while filming this. I tried playing without glasses, since I am like a mole then to increase confidence, but I am not there yet. I got lost on the blurry fretboard :smile:

To my knowledge, I’m not left-handed. But then again, maybe I was and my parents trained it out of me. I have no idea. What is a ‘hcsterg’-guitar?

@NicoleKKB

Thank you :slightly_smiling_face: I hadn’t exactly practiced much during my work weeks. But now after a bit more than one week vacation, I had grown impatient and was all the time telling me “you have to be able to do that, you should be better”. That seems to be a recurring topic for me: Handling ambition and impatience :woozy_face:

@Lisa_S

The thing is, that actually, I am not only one month in, I had played at a very much beginner level more than 25 years ago, and had tried to get back to playing guitar at least two times during my years here in Finland. So, there is always the thought in my head “you should be better”.

More than 25 years ago, I had learned playing guitar with “Peter Bursch”-books. Are they still selling “Peter Bursch”-guitar books in Germany? :nerd_face:

Thank you so much, Andrea :slightly_smiling_face: I’m singing the song in a lower key when I am in the shower, but I cannot manage that yet while playing guitar at the same time.

The timing, yes. Seems that happened because of my impatience. I have a version of that song in my mind that is decidedly more slow. So I had the instructions given in the video in my mind and was struggling against them at the same time. Probably, I should have been more at ease and more open to try a more exact copy first :slightly_smiling_face:

There we are again. I have to be patient :rainbow:

Don’t get me wrong, I like this slower version. I think it’s ok to experiment with e.g. slowing a song down (and hold that speed) or give it your own interpretation. No need to create an exact copy of the original. Indeed, I was impressed about your approach to the song, easy chords, but not an easy one to sing, at least for me.

Andrea, I didn’t :slightly_smiling_face:

Not at all. But that’s what’s so nice about being able to get feedback for example from you. Sometimes there are things that happen unconsciously, and in order to take a new look at such things feedback is needed. Very much so :slightly_smiling_face:

For example, I didn’t realize why that take sounded like it did until I got feedback on the tempo. Then it started to dawn on me. Ah … That’s why :slightly_smiling_face:

Meaning, I do very much appreciate your feedback :kissing_heart:

If you look at your video you’ll see that it’s back to front. Look at the name on the head stock. It’s Gretsch backwards. :smiley:

It seems I got a pirated guitar :nerd_face::nerd_face::nerd_face: A Hcsterg. Now I got it.

Time to give the guitar a new name. But how do you even pronounce that? Tschtärk? Sounds brutish :upside_down_face:

I seriously did not get that :smile:

sssssst ,I had to ask my wife what the heck they were joking about on my video of the rissing sun (?) :blush:

That sounds like a perfectly valid word :upside_down_face: “Riss” is German and means “tear” or “crack”. Now we will Denglish it and form a gerund. “Rissing”

Accordingly, your song was about how the sun is breaking through the clouds :partly_sunny:. The sun has a house behind these clouds, and every morning she has to get up, stand up, fight for her rights in order to begin the important work of rissing.

It’s a much more family friendly version as well :wink: Confess, you were mainly concerned with not wanting to hurt the feelings of more conservative forum users :wink:

You know, if you learning guitar in Germany there’s no way around Peter… :rofl: Bought 2 of his books last year, too, before I found Justin. I think, it’s good to have both, the books are quite nice though. :sweat_smile:

Yes, he knows (knew? no idea if he is still alive) how to make things sound easy. Even when I could have gone without “Heute hier, morgen dort” und “Die Moorsoldaten” :nerd_face:

These are both just great, I think your voice works really nicely with the Tom Waits tune. I play Hold On, too, it’s a good one to try out a bit of palm muting with.

No… They aren’t, really :slightly_smiling_face: But they were important steps to get over my serious fear of recording myself.

I’m honestly glad about the comments on my voice and the Tom Waits song though. This will be an important reason to revisit the song soon :slightly_smiling_face:
