JokuMuu's Learning Log

Hi Nicole ,
First

:joy:
And who cares if

:grinning_face_with_big_eyes: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

No, but I think this one is better than the one I had in mind (he has several from Tammy’s lesson 6 that Justin recommends somewhere as a best explanation indicated by students and there is one in the closed section of PMT that I thought of after hearing another video this week but I don’t remember which one) although I have no active memories of this one you post but the first 2 minutes sounds good, so that covers it .I think

Well than that makes me glad too

Ps: thanks to Dominique I looked some above up about “picking things up easy” from your first episode …Most people here don’t have the ability to pick things up quickly… me too, although some are now thinking, what? and you do so much after almost 6 years (just looked up, thought it was shorter), but the number of hours I put in… structured or uh … not  was enormous and is still higher than the average here I know , When I think back to friends who were teenagers and later older friends who played music 20+ years old… then I really am a snail with amnesia… I already practiced guitar for an hour and a half this morning and I still take another half hour 2 or 3 times in the afternoon :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I sleep well on it because it tires me out immensely and thinking of it again tonight zzzz  …and when there are 7 or 8 4 i just see  bars of cool stuff John Mayer -slow dancing that I recently learned today stick in my head…only the intro … I’m sure a whole other song is leaving my brain…

Now i have some playing/learning to do ,something to do with :christmas_tree: :see_no_evil_monkey:

Greetings :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

so we started pretty much at the same time?
same for me, it feels shorter! But you’re a bit hard on yourself! I see you playing lots of things that I can’t while I’m generally happy with my journey and progress ( don’t take the illusion away from me! )
But I also know I wasn’t always practicing in an effective and efficient way and would like to do better! Like you, I often spent hours with the guitar, but didn’t feel like advancing much.
If you say that you - so me too - we’re snails, then at least, we’re race-snails

Oh, I loved this one too and was revisiting it a few times, because it was way too much for me to digest at once. Still have it on my favourites list and plan to watch the rest. I even have a mini instrumental song I started after the lesson that I played at an open mic when I didn’t want to sing and another started (but never finished) song inspired by this lesson.

I fear, I will never have it, whatever this “it” may be in the end

Yes. 100 % agreed. I have started learning quite a lot of different techniques in the last weeks, most of them are challenging for me. As much as I enjoy the challenge, it will take a long time and patience to get more proficient in these techniques. This was the major reason, why I even considered keeping a break with the 1:1 lessons. Learning finger rolling to the upper string after fast hammer-on, is all good and fine… but that’s where I draw the line at the moment. There is still time to learn this in five years or so  So, I’m really happy with the changed lesson focus.

You, @roger_holland very clearly have a good amount of “it”. With “it”, I mean dedication to guitar playing, willingness to invest a lot of time, curiosity, love for music, sensitivity and feeling to play fingerstyle with feeling, while daring to sound like yourself.

It has been hard to concentrate on music in the last days (tomorrow I will find out whether I will lose my job or not…). Yet, at least I came up with an eight bar chord progression that I am very happy with - even if I had next to no peace of mind to actually practice playing it.

Here it is (it’s supposed to be slow and tender):
| C | Fmaj7 | Dm | G | Cmaj7 | F | G | C |

I had tried to forget all the common chord progressions I heard so much about. I had tried to forget about theory and I just listened. For the longest time something bothered me in the second part of the progression - it sounded too cheerful and wouldn’t completely match the character of the first four bars. Along came Cmaj7. Problem solved. What a beautiful chord.

Accordingly, when I took my chord progression to my lesson with Antti today, I knew that this is the chord progression I want to keep working on. No need for any changes.

I played the progression for him (badly rehearsed since see above). Then we switched roles and Antti played it. I couldn’t help but smile. Sounds like fire burning in the cold. I could hear logs crackling in the fireplace.

Most fascinatingly - for the next lesson - Antti gave me the task to write a melody for the chord progression. The first note for each bar is given (each chord’s third) and my task is to connect the thirds to each other. I know, I will love doing this.

Besides the very first part ( :sad_but_relieved_face: Drücke dir alle zur Verfügung stehenden Daumen!!!), it’s a lovely update. In my mind, this progression sounds lovely. Moving from Dm to G is on of my favourite moves from a sound perspective. Hopefully, you can forget about your sorrows a little while creating a melody for this progression. It will be great fun!

Thanks :face_blowing_a_kiss:

There is something about it, yes. I actually like whole sequence from Fmaj7 (it had to be this and no other F-incarnation, I tested) to Dm - sounding like a gently sparkling starting fire slowly getting bigger in the fireplace - and then comes big bold G.

(I’ll send you a DM tomorrow…)

You’ve got a ii V I progression there (the Dm G Cmaj7), which is a very common jazz chord progression.

Again misery with your work :grimacing:, wondering how you are doing now…I wish you all the power :crossed_fingers:

Greetings

See reply in your LL… sent just now. The news I got weren’t the kind of news I had hoped for.

But, hey, it’s not the end of the world. New beginnings and all. Doors closing, new doors opening. I might even try to believe in these slogans. Not today though, today I need to collect my broken shards and to glue myself together again.

So sorry to read that, Nicole! I’m sending you some of these: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:.
Keep on keeping on! Maybe this opens up new and even better options.

Thanks, Andrea, the very same thoughts and hugs to you :face_blowing_a_kiss:

So sorry for you, Nicole. It’s a bummer and easily can knock you off your feet. Sending a hug your way. Now, let’s hope that the new door opening up will bring some better opportunities. Keep my fingers crossed for you!

For today and the weekend: Do something to soothe yourself and that is good for you. Real life needs a break sometimes.

Hi Nicole ,
Sorry to read  I didn’t know this morning whether I should first look in my LL or here … but fortunately I immediately start to laugh a little at what you typed …

In a flash yesterday it went through my head “if a door closes then”, but if a door even has to close or it has really just been slammed shut in front of you, then I (and other people) sometimes want to open and close that door and open and close and open and close (you get the picture) with that person’s head in between that say`s that to you :scream:

Good luck with the coming time and the decisions you have to make… when the dust settles I wish you all the happiness and fun that can come with this new time

:hugs:

Sorry to read about that Nicole, the saying here is slightly different and goes something like “when a door closes a bigger door will open”; it has worked like that throughout the years with my jobs and I hope it’ll work with you as well!
That’s great to read how your chord progression is keeping you engaged with your guitar, and melody will do as well! You’re lucky to have a in-person sensible teacher.

Thanks, Silvia. Let’s see what the future will bring.

“You look happier”, said my husband, when he came into the room, where I was playing guitar. I hadn’t even noticed that I had stopped worrying, because I had become so absorbed in music…

I might be crying today still, but that can then relatively easily be explained by testing this unbelievably hot currywurst sauce.

Where did you get this from? I need to try it. I love Currywurst (both the food an the song )!

This is the power and magic of music! So good to have this in life and great it serves you well, too.

After fighting with the looper in Amplitube yesterday and not being happy with any of it and after that fighting with trying to record in Cubase Elements and not being too happy with any of it either, I remembered that GuitarPro could be a useful tool as well. At least the rhythm guitar in GuitarPro will play strictly on time…

So, today I entered the chord progression into Guitar Pro, put it to play in a loop and thought how to connect the thirds to be played on every first beat of each bar. Using GuitarPro to do that was actually useful, since I could try to immediately jot down, what sounded nice. I haven’t been exactly adventurous and mainly stuck to the C major open scale. Aah… I also added a very basic drum pattern (so much more fun than playing along to a metronome).

Edit 8.12.25
Some too sour notes in the melody fixed. Chord tones are fascinating, they seem like the safe and boring choice and yet sound so good over their corresponding chords. Accordingly “non-chord tones” now used more sparingly.

For reasons, I have not exactly been in guitar playing mood in the last days. Yesterday, we finally got some snow at least (which will melt away any minute now…) and the darkness subsided for a moment.

Thus, I took another look at the melody I had been writing, noticed mistakes, and corrected these mistakes - this applies both to notes and rhythm. To me, the melody is now more rounded and the first bar seems less rushed. Aah, I also reduced the tempo by measly 3 BPM.

As can be seen from the picture below, the melody stayed within two octaves. As also can been seen, I daringly combined pattern 3 and pattern 5 of the major scale. This is a deliberate choice.

Let’s see if I can memorize the notes plus the order of the four different melody rhythms for my last 1:1 guitar lesson of the year on Thursday…
