I did the old “Really Useful Strumming Techniques” 2 part course, which has been replaced by Strumming SOS. I think RUST is probably roughly equivalent to the Grade 1 and Grade 2 parts of Strumming SOS, and as such I can’t recommend it highly enough. In addition to being “Really Useful” it’s a lot of fun and also a massive confidence booster.
I bought him the 2 beginner song books when he first started the lessons app.
Hello… I have had the application on month to month for the first year; and renewed and renewed and paid in full the second. I have completed beginner 1 & 2 and have been consolidating for the last six months. I like to watch the lessons on the website, and practice with the app. Also you have the app with lessons anytime. I found both helpful and enjoy the app breaking downs songs, strumming and the play along options. I will renew for the 3rd in a few months. Thank you!
I’ve been wanting to subscribe for a year and decided to do it now but I’m a bit hesitant as the website and app lessons are different. If I’m subscribed to web do I have the app subscription as well and vice versa?
Hello Chris.
Nice to meet you, and welcome to JustinGuitar and the Community.
First and foremost, the website is free.
99.99% of Justin’s website courses are entirely free.
He runs it funded by an honour system whereby those who are able to afford it are asked to donate to support the aim of providing guitar lessons for everone.
It is also funded by a very few subscription only courses and the sale of products and merchandise.
Nobody is under any obligation to donate or purchase or subscribe to anything.
The fact that people do is a recognition of Justin’s excellent teaching and materials and the mission to teach music in general.
The App was not developed to host the video lessons but as a tool for people to play along with backing tracks.
It grew and grew and it now offers amazing functionality, including Grades 1 to 3 of the beginner course as video lessons.
The website has those lessons along with the supporting text and other materials. The website also has many further grades and courses.
You can sign up to the website (and Community) at no cost.
You can subscribe to the App also if you wish.
They are not connected accounts because the App gets sold through App stores (for ios or android respectively).
I see. Thank you for your help sir!
I have purchased a sub through the app last year. If that lapses, what do I lose on the website side of this,
Welcome to the forum Mike
You shouldn’t lose anything the app and website are separate entities.
Oh nice. I was worried if I let the sub last I’d lose access on the website. Thanks!!
Welcome Mike, the website is 99% free. There are some paid for or subscription courses, for example Practical Music Theory but even these are great value for money IMHO. ![]()
Oh good.
I was looking at the lessons and the songs and stuff and hoping it stayed.
I will look into those other courses though
When you rarely hit a pay wall and are not sure of the requirement or value, just shout up here for advice. I’ve purchased many of these over the years and not regretted any and many of those have been refilmed and updated and I’ve bought the latest versions as well. But hey your mileage may vary !
Just enjoy the ride.

I would add, for now just follow the website Grade system one lesson at a time. Justin might suggest certain additional courses to supplement those lessons but they won’t hold you back. Stick to the path and you won’t go wrong.

Thank you for the advice I can’t wait to get started again
Is there a difference between learning from the app, vs here on the website?
Also, I don’t understand the pricing on the app. Some features are listed more than once with different prices.
From a beginner perspective (grade 1 to 3) :
For learning, both have the same videos and content. Though, the website has more content (text next to the video, song lessons, intermediate grades) and a bigger screen.
The app excels in helping you pratice. You can play along to simplified backing tracks of your favorite songs. It’s fun and it feels like being in the band. You may improve your chord changes and rythm groove faster with that tool.
To pratice on the website, you can buy the paper beginner songbook and watch the song lessons videos. Play with the original recording on youtube. Eventually, that’s what you will want to do, but it’s harder to do when starting out. That’s why Justin recommends the app in many of his video in the beginner stage.
For the app price differences, I would assume it’s older deals not available anymore. The most recent price is the one shown in the app.
Personnally, I have been playing for 3 years. I used the website to watch the videos and the app to pratice songs for 2 years. I also had the beginner songbook. And now, for the past year, I used the website and the more advanced songbooks to get more challenge.
Thank you, that was very helpful. I downloaded the app on my iPad, and it just shows one price. The screenshot was for the Mac via the App Store, but read it wasn’t recommended on it, so I’ll use my iPad.
I think $99 a year is a fair price for all Justin’s hard work, so I’ll sub for a year.
Hi, i’am new and use since two month the webside. The grade one practilcle lessons were really cool - having Justin talking and in a way guiding you was nice - in a way a positive motivation.
What I don’t like was the non existing practice lesson in grade two. I have no subscription, so I thought with a subscription I wil benefit from already prepared practice lessons as experienced in grade one - including Justin talking and guiding you.
Now I use since three days the app including a subscription, the practice lessons are existing, but there is no Justin guiding you. I don’t like this kind of practice at all.
So my question: Are the practical lessons on the web side, having a subscription, available und each lesson include a video with Justin guiding you? Like the grade one practice lesson?
All beginner grade have explanations to then with videos.
Here’s the page for grade 2.

Select lesson at right side. There’s no subscription for the Web only specific content like strumming SOS or “THE APP” musopia, well worth having.
Hello @Metapolis and welcome to the Community.
Thanks for being an App subscriber and supporting JustinGuitar.
Each and every module in the beginner grades has a pre-made practice routine. The website has a ‘Practice Assistant’ that you can load with pre-filled practice items for these modules.
Example:
Grade 2 Module 8
Grade 2 Module 9
At the end of a grade is a consolidation lesson.
Grade 2 Consolidation
I hope that helps.
