@Jwaters I heard you play on the AVOYP threads and you’ll do fine. Just remember to pay attention to what your buddy is playing and learn something to take home with you.
When I did this for the first time (playing with a friend who’s played for 30 years), we picked a song that we both liked, was within my abilities, and had multiple layers that two players could choose from.
We settled on “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd. We would both play the chords, he would play the solo, I’d play the vocal melody.
I see him once a year at Thanksgiving (USA Holiday). I’ve been practicing since last November. We’re gonna give it a go this November
I’ll probably play some 12-bar blues progressions while he solos over them as well.
There is a lot of great feed back and it’s making me feel so much more comfortable about this. I am hoping I learn something and I did tell him that I only have a handful of songs . He told me he learned a lot of his songs by watching friends hands play, which is incredible that someone can do that . Maybe he will show me something.
Well today was the day we got together at my place on a nice day and sat on my patio and we started by talking and a pint of beer. Then I kinda went into what I can do and play and he played over top of me on any song I played and then he showed me a few things. But this guy played anything I threw at him . If I played a song on iPad he listened to it a few seconds then started playing right along with it it’s like he know everything. It kinda threw me of but the I remembered I am having fun and I started to actually learn something. So at the end of the session I thought well this was the last I would play with him ,and he asked me when you want to do this again it was fun. I was kinda shocked, because he was so good and I didn’t really have the same skills. I definitely replayed anytime you want. Maybe it was the good beer or maybe we just connected. But any way to all that replayed thanks for the encouragement to get me to do this it was a great first experience. And by the way I did follow Justin’s advice to talk about a set list we can both play for next time and this will be a lot of effort on my part but I will work through it. To All thanks again!!!
Great, I’m glad it went so well! Keep us posted of any future jam sessions.
This is so cool Jeff!!!
Glad you enjoyed yourself & that your friend did too! Playing with another musician is always a bit scary but so worth it!!!
I remember this time when I was practicing at work & a coworker heard me playing & stopped to chat. It turned out that he was a casual/occasional player, so I handed him my guitar and asked him to show me his “stuff”. Turned out he was really, really good! He played & sang several Country songs, then handed me the guitar with a “Now it’s your turn”… he called the chords while I played & he sang … it was so much fun & I learned how to play Folsum Prison Blues!!! So cool to play with someone further into the Journey!!!
Congrats!!!
Tod
