I’m enjoying the adventures of Mal ‘off the beaten track’
Something different again and coming along nicely!
Well played and an enjoyable listen.
I agree with David on this regarding the drums. Your timing was fine to these lugs, but I think removing the beat would give you more latitude in playing around with your own timing/phrasing.
These ‘older ones’ were all covers, a quarter of a century after the Brecht/Weil original
For me, the ‘jazzification’ with key changes and upbeat swing, detracts from the darker, more monotonous original song, which was intended to be sung on the street, accompanied by an organgrinder.
I’ve often thought I should learn to sing it and now maybe I will.
It’s also a great excuse to buy an organgrinder…
Thanks Brian, indeed the lyrics to this song are very dark. Personally the jazz feel is what brings the song to life, as it were. As opposed to the somewhat monotone delivery of the original.
The tempo/ drum track has been changed and is sounding better. Another vid is immenent.
Simply songs that I enjoy and wish to play them in the way they fall.
Pleased you enjoyed the effort thus far.
Good luck with nailing it as you want to Mal. It’s sounding good already and I’ve always loved the song….all the way back to the Beggar’s Opera! I’ve had a similar response to listening to a lot of blues that @sclay has in that I’m hearing blues in jazz songs and particularly in some Cole Porter songs. I wish I was capable of tackling something by him.
Only just saw this one Mal! It sounds like a really tricky one to nail, with the singing too. It sounded to me a bit like, if you turned off the drum backing your playing sounds more in the pocket. Your rhythm playing stands on its own to my ears and the whole thing sounds good.
Thanks John, it is getting there but finding it is not easy, not yet. I have always enjoyed this song since first hearing it by Bobby Darin.
I too enjoy jazz blues, or even jazz and blues.
As for tackling any songs like you mention, just go for it, it will turn out how you want and if it is different so much the better.
Thanks Phil, the drum track has changed and the whole song is sounding better. Worked on it a lot yesterday, but still not quite where it sounds / feels right. Onwards.
That’s a great song choice, Mal. It’s coming along really well. It looks a trick one to play and sing but you’re doing a superb job with it. Agree with Phil that your rhythm playing sounded in the pocket without the drum track. So maybe a change in drum track which I see you’ve already done will make a big difference. Look forward to see how this one sounds when you’ve hit that sound/feel you want.
Great song to tackle Mal and you are well on your wayto make this a really great cover with all the great tips and suggestions others have already given. I don’t have much to add other than have you come across Sandra Sherman’s youtube channel? One of her tutorials on jazz rhythm popped up in my feed out of nowhere and having watched it I am finally starting to understand jazz rhythm. Her entire channel is just about jazz and is now my go-to place when I want to learn a bit more about it. She even has a tutorial for Mack the Knife Well worth checking out if you haven’t already. Jass Guitar Rythm Patterns Mack The Knife tutorial
Molly, thank you for the tip. I am not aware of Sandra Sherman, I will check her channel. Let me know what you think of the song.
Just looking at the ‘Mack’ vid, glad it was not seen prior to my recording, it might have been another six months before posting.
Sounding good Mal.
I was still curious as to what it would sound like without the drums and had a couple of free minutes, so ran it through Moises to remove them. I prefer it
(DM me if you want it)
Hi Malz,
Luckily you have a nice voice , because I think the guitar could be louder but no problemo if not ,just asking …like it very much that groove …great work
