Martin O N Learning Log - Progress Journal

Thanks Brian - you’re very kind as always

I’m working on a few things at the moment, including this ‘Tango’ by Michael Coghlan. I’m getting comfortable with the ‘A’ section and have just started into the ‘B’ section. Making this recording as a check-point and to have a look at what needs work. Most obviously, I need to clean up the E9 chord that comes at the end. I find that fingering tricky so will need to look at wrist position.

Here’s the latest on Tango. Getting there but am almost at end of focused study with this one (Wednesday is likely to be my last day so I might post a final upload then). As always, the recording process if incredibly instructive (e.g. realised I had been consistently playing a wrong note!). I think I’ll experiment with using video as a feedback tool for very short bits of pieces I am learning (e.g. a bar or two) to get the benefit of that feedback earlier.

As always, I’m really just posting here as a means of keeping me on track but if anyone does happen to stop by and constructive comments (critical or otherwise!) are always welcome. Hope all in JG guitar-land are enjoying themselves. It’s a good time of year to come back to indoor pursuits

Tango (Michael Coughlan): here’s a final recording. Technically it’s pretty decent but it doesn’t quite have enough feeling in it for me. Possibly an early morning issue! Anyhow, I think I’ll keep playing this occasionally and see if I can work on the expression but for now I’m done with studying it. Time to find something new for the next four weeks or so.

I really enjoyed listening to the last tango. Even if I don’t know anything about latin music, I’m looking forward to the final recording. YouTube says the video is still being edited, so while I wait, I’ll listen to your “Walking Bass” playlist, which is great music for relaxing or for me to listen to in the background while I work.
Cheers Withold

Thanks Withold - you’re very kind. Thanks for the heads up on the YT upload also - it was paused for some reason but now it’s fixed. I just made a quick visit to your own practice journal. Lots of interesting stuff there already - bravo!

Just popping up a current status video for ‘If We Were Vampires’ by Jason Isbell. I’ve been playing/learning this on-and-off over the last month. I can’t work out all the picking patterns he does (or find a good enough lesson) so I’m doing some kind of version of my own. It’s a bit clumsy at times and there are a few mistakes but I’m coming close to the end of working on this. Time to think what my next song will be.

In case useful to have, here’s the version that I’ve mostly looked at to try to work this out. Listening to it again just now, unsurprisingly there’s quite a distance between me and Jason!
