Thanks for watching Ian and Jason I’m happy that you liked this project
I love to see other community members inspired by the JustinGuitar Rock Songbook and Moise as I’m a big believer that those 2 tools can be a game changer in everyone’s journey.
I’m back with an update to my rock songbook project !
Why did it take so long? Well… Blues Immersion took up most of my playing time!
But after all the great conversations we had about Rock Immersion - RIM , I felt the itch to dive back in.
I first learned this one about a year ago and had been practicing it at around 80% speed. Then BLIM took over, and it ended up on the back burner. Today I dusted it off — and to my surprise, I hit 100% speed after 2-3 hours of rehearsing! It’s not a perfect take, but I’m satisfied with it enough to move to song #13.
The main challenges for this song were:
Speed & Energy – It’s short, fast, and intense. No time to relax!
Dynamics & Tone – Those quiet, clean verses exploding into massive choruses… so satisfying to play!
String Muting – At this tempo and with this much gain, keeping unwanted noise under control is a real challenge.
Well done Mathieu, very well played! I am glad to see you continuing with your rock songbook project. Great song, reminds me of my secondary school days.
You would think this would become cliché after so many songs using it, but it is still very effective. I love playing these transitions in songs. My main problem is technical switch (pedal stomp) at the right moment - you don’t seem to have any issues. Did you change the tone at the DAW later or in the runtime?
Hi Mathieu,
Nice and that was pretty speedy
Liked the end …Yheayyy arm up nice smile and then… the technology lets you down …I know that and it will often happen to me ,it is what makes this extra +
Good to see you’re back at it Mathieu. Funnily enough, just yesterday I decided I should start recording again, and started practicing a rock songbook song again Different song, though.
Something was up with the audio in your video - the sound coming through wasn’t in sync with your playing.
Wow, what a great coincidence! Which one are you working on right now? I can’t wait to see it!
Yes, my amp setup is entirely software-based — I use a Neural DSP amp sim inside my DAW (Reaper). I handle preset switching through MIDI automation, which I program directly into the backing track when I first set up the project.
It was a serious headache to figure out at first — I actually used to hate the whole process and almost gave up on the software route altogether. That cool Fender hardware modeler with a footswitch, like the one @jkahn has, was definitely calling my name! Though, I agree it must be pretty hard to sync your foot exactly at the right time like you are saying @Boris1565
You could not be more right @roger_holland : technology really left me down. I used to record both video and audio directly from my computer using Reaper and OBS, and then sync everything automatically in DaVinci Resolve. But ever since I upgraded to Windows 11, things went downhill — the audio starts glitching whenever I run both programs at the same time. It’s manageable for slower songs, but with this one, it was a mess.
So I had to switch and record the video with my phone instead. Then I found out DaVinci wasn’t syncing the audio from Reaper and the video from my phone automatically anymore, so I had to do it all manually — which isn’t very precise, my hands ended up slightly out of sync. And finally I discovered that my 4K phone footage was crashing my computer — so I had to reconfigure my phone to 1080p and re-film the whole thing.
In the end, the audio and video are from different takes. By the time I got to the final re-shoot, my brain and hands were fried after two hours of power chords, and I was seriously fed up with all the tech issues. I just thought, “There’s no way I’m starting over again, I hope this will work.”
If you have a focusrite too, it seems to be a common problem with Win 11 for some users on Reddit, but for others like @jkahn it’s working fine. In the end, I think I’ll stick to not using OBS even if it means that the video will be a little out of sync. If you want to try some things, I’ll share my research:
Uninstalling the Win 11 Focusrite driver. And installing the Windows 7 driver from here
Increase the priority of the Reaper process to “Real time” in the task manager like shown here
Put focusrite to trash and buy another brand ? AhAhahah !
Out of the 3 options, I think it’s using the Win 7 driver that made the best improvement. At least, right now, I’m able to run 2 softwares without audio glitch Reaper + Neural DSP + sometimes Chrome. When I add OBS, it’s hit or miss though. You might have more luck if you don’t use Neural DSP which is resource heavy on the computer.
Good job on this one, Mathieu! It’s a fun song to play and while it seems easy, there are quite a few tricky things about it. Probably should start recording some songs too, finally.
Of course I saw that the synchronization went wrong a little, but that doesn’t matter to me…
I meant pushing out your phone recording with the remote control (mine for 3 euros 50 cents or so) which often glitches… o boy
I know all those words you write down, but I have no idea yet what exactly they do/can mean
Thanks, Ashu and Artem I really hope Rock Immersion becomes a reality someday! In the meantime, I feel like Justin’s Rock Songbook is the closest thing we’ve got.
Yes, tag me when you do so I can see it !
Shoot! I was actually thinking of grabbing one of those. It’s a shame they glitch — not sure I want to add another potential point of failure to my already fragile tech setup.
EDIT: The audio/video sync issue is now solved! Somehow, DaVinci Resolve just decided to work properly this morning. Ahhh, tech is so mysterious! Even with an IT background, it still manages to surprise me every day.
Thanks for tagging me, Mathieu!
I wasn’t aware of your project! Nice!
And well played. I wasn’t so sure about the timing, but if the sync went off anyway, it’s clear that such a fast song won’t sound perfectly timed.
Made my way back through nearly all the songs! Great!
I’ll have to work on my rock abilities too after BLIM!
I’m really glad you enjoyed the other songs too. I learned a lot working on them — song #4, La Grange, was a huge milestone for me at the time. I honestly thought the project might stop there, but I kept going, and now we’re at song #12 — just 3 more to hit the original goal!
That is cool. I prefer hardware approach, but I will explore if adding some kind of midi controller could potentially do the automation of preset switches for me.
Very strange. I never had any issues with my focusrite on Win 11. I use Ableton instead of Reaper, and use a modeller rather than software amp, so that might have something to do with it. Even ran a super low buffer size to get latency as low as possible. My Windows PC is very powerful though, loads of CPU cores - so maybe that has something to do with it. I’m now on Mac though, which is also fine with the Focusrite. I bet it’s a PC thing rather than the Focusrite hardware TBH.
A couple of years back, well before the TMP, I was tossing up whether to go the software or amp route. I ended up with the Fender GTX50 amp for cheaper than the software stack I was looking at (Amplitube + midi footswitch). The TMP is totally awesome btw, sounds so good I’ve heard Neural DSP is also awesome but I’ve never used it.
This will always be a special song for me as it’s 1 of the 2 songs that I played in front of the community in my first open mic - OM 32. To participate in a community open mic was a goal that I gave myself in July 2023 and I finally achieved it 2 years later on August 9 2025.
Prior to that open mic, I had recorded a special version of the song with one guitar playing the power chord version, one guitar playing the barre chords version and one guitar playing the lead solo.
Live version
For the open mic, you can see that I choose to perform the power chord version. I thought to myself : my nerves will be so high, I should stick to the safer bet ! It’s not the time to mess with the barre chords and the solo Also, you might notice, it’s not even the same guitar as my Stratocaster got a problem a few days before the open mic and I had to have a backup plan.
