Michael’s TMHCR Cover August 23

Thanks again Richard @Richard_close2u I am going to have to get my thinking cap on for this.

Michael, have you considered the Strumming SOS Course Grade 1? It might make your life easier. Justin shows how to do the exercises and you practice along with him on the screen, mostly on muted strings, and after that with the metronome. It helped me a lot to improve the movement of my forearm, as it focuses on the strumming hand only.

Yes have done Grade 1 of the strumming course and in fact halfway through Grade 2. One of the reasons I got Grade 1 as I thought I was not moving my arm enough, and it seemed have corrected it.

Having thought about it a lot, this is what seems to be happening. If I just strumming chords my arm moves, perhaps not enough, however when I start to sing my brain seems to pay less attention to my strumming action and more on chords and singing hence arm stops moving. So need to pay more attention to strumming when singing. Also am revisiting some of the lessons in Grade 1.

Michael, if you want to play and sing at the same time, the best thing to do is practicing songs in the same way Justin shows in his songs lessons with the 4 downstrums on the beat: in this way your arm has to move consistently (I think a metronome would be very useful too). Make things as easier as you can, it’ll pay off in the long run. Don’t bother too much about patterns, they will come. As extra necessary practice tap your foot when you listen to the song you want to learn, and then sing it, silently or aloud, while tapping. If you can do these things and you train yourself to play the downstrums as much accurately as you can you are already halfway there.

I’m late to the party, again and everything has been covered by everyone else, so all I’ll say is, thanks for sharing Michael. I enjoyed it.

So much already said here Michael. I do think once you sort your strumming out it will lift your playing game massively.

I really wanted to commend you on your improvement, I’ve watched a few of your AVOYPs since you joined the community and each one is an improvement on the last.

Jk @jkahn
Yes strumming is an issue that needs sorting out, and have been watching what is happening, if I am just strumming a chord then I am fairly relaxed and get arm movement. When I start to sing my arm gets tensed up and stops moving as much, I think because I am also thinking about singing. When start to record as well that’s really where it goes wrong.
Lots of practice coming up and try to relax more when strumming.
