Module 4 Practice

what mod are you in? the practice assistant tells you, whatever chords have been covered so far. the ones you had the most trouble with do again and again. i just practice all of them.

I tend to take long breaks between modules. Often a few months. Gives me a chance to practise what I have learnt. I also set aside weeks where I don’t bother doing any of the practise exercises and just play songs.

It is just me or in the “Module 4 Practice”, in the song sections, the first song is right off the bat too fast?

Changing from Em to Dm at that speed feels impossible.

I’m getting close to the end of grade 2 and have come across MAYBE one song with D minor in it. Not saying you shouldn’t practice it, but it may be better to just wait until it comes up in a song you really like and want to learn.

@JMDOG Hello and welcome to the community. Which song are you referring to?

I am referring to Grade 1 Module 4 Practice. The last video has the Routine which we can set as active. In that routine, after the first 10 minutes of practice and strumming, comes rhe song section. I am talking about that.

Give it a week and your mindset may change to - oh, this is possible. People who’ve heard me play the guitar oke songs for the 1st time marvel at how quickly progress can be after a week or 2. I spent 1hr a day at that stage.

Arctic Monkeys - 505
Tom Waits - Chocolate Jesus
Edwyn Collins - (I’ve Never Met) A Girl Like You

I hope that helps.

I’m SO GLAD I found this thread, because I was finding myself in a similar headspace. Doing great on my one minute changes, but I felt like I needed to master at least ONE song before moving on. Tried playing 505, kept screwing up, and got discouraged. But this thread helped me realize that I don’t have to “master” anything this early on. It’ll all come together as it comes together.

It was very comforting to read all of these replies. I think I’m ready to jump into Module 5 after all!

Hello everyone,

I have a question about the requirement: “You’re able to play at least one song decently well most of the way through” to move on. Does this mean I need to play it by myself without using the video assistant in the practice routine section? If so, that would require me to memorize everything in the video about the song, including when and what chords to play and when to sing the lyrics.

Additionally, is it required to play chords with no extra open strings (like Dm) in both the song and the chord changes practice to consider myself passing that requirement? If so, is there a good way to achieve that? I find it challenging to play the right strings.

Thank you.

Hi

First you don t have to sing on songs , its up to you but theres no obligation

and you dont have to master everything just read the reply before :

But this thread helped me realize that I don’t have to “master” anything this early on. It’ll all come together as it comes together.

use the video assistant

Hello ! Do I have to memorize a song from the app or just be able to play through it ? Thanks a lot !

It’s different for each one, i’m enjoy learn, so every module i expend a couple hours playing and trying stuff, not actually get good on it, but be capable of doing without watch the lessons again.
And keep moving on modules, it’s something like “i want to learn every part and start again” until i do it naturally.

Second time i’m learn guitar, but it’s the first time i’m having fun on it

Hi :wave:t3:
Short answer is yes, it’s good to start writing and memorizing any song that you would like to play whatever stage you’re at. And also because you will be required to memorize 5 songs of your choice by the end of this grade (grade 1 module 7).

Here I’m quickly sharing my experience with the next lessons that you’ll take (I’m hoping it will be of some help to you and others):
So yesterday I started Grade 2 and watched the first lesson video of that module (module 8). I finished the lessons of the last module of grade 1 (module 7) like 40 days ago. When you reach there, Mr. Justin in the lesson will recommend taking 30 days to work on some Requirements.
The requirements were hard for me and sometimes I got frustrated and bored and stuck but thankfully I didn’t stop more than 4 days in a row, and songs of my favorite musicians kept me picking up the guitar even though I didn’t want to do the boring routine practice (that’s how I felt in some days).
One of the requirements that i kept putting off is to Memorize any 5 Songs! Finally last week I started writing my 5 songs that I picked to Memorize them and it was fun.
I advise you to start writing and memorizing any song that you would like to play and check the lyrics on a site like Genus, it will help you see and understand the songs structure and how each song got its own arrangements of Verses, Choruses, pre C, post C, Bridge and Instrumentals and others. Dont worry about these now, I’m sure you’ll love them when you get to them and with time you will start writing and memorizing songs better.

I’m sorry for the delay of my answer! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me. I’ll definitely start memorizing songs (I started module 6), because of your comment I bought one of Justin’s songbooks so thanks a lot

do I need to do a song from the website/app? can I do any song I want? I am playing ‘Moreton Bay’ from a tab i got online, and I am finding it good at helping me learn to jump my fingers around on the fretts/strings. it is fingerstyle, I’m not sure if I should be working on a song that is strumming instead. I find the strumming pattern really easy.

Hi Vivienne, I’m at the beginning of Grade 3 now, but I recall being less than inspired by some of the song choices in the early modules. That said, I did choose at least one of the songs Justin suggests to include in my practice. (Heck, I still learn songs I don’t particularly like when they provide a good platform for working on a particular skill!) Justin usually selects songs that match closely with the skills he’s teaching at the time. And if I recall correctly, the website lessons for those songs are aimed at the playing level of the module itself. And - the song selection grows pretty quickly, so you’ll soon be past this minor frustration.

I don’t recall your guitar background, but in general I’d suggest that at Grade 1 Module 4, it’s best to leave finger style aside for a while and focus on the basics Justin is presenting.
