Hello all! First all all happy holidays to those who celebrate and the best possible of weeks for thoe who can’t or don’t want to.
So, I’ve finally signed up to this site, I’ve been ooh-ing and aah-ing for years but I love me a forum, so… Looking forward to reading some of it!
I played the guitar a tiny bit when I was a kid, then stopped because, well, practice, but never really got over wanting to play. I bought an electro-acoustic on London’s Denmark Street when I had saved a bit of money at uni (not sure they sold me the best possible guitar, but hey), held on to that through many a move. During the pandemic, I picked it up to make use of the five minutes between Zoom meetings and finally stuck with it. Found a teacher, did some online courses, dabbled in songwriting (more recently) and fell off the wagon with the guitar a bit, but decided this September that I’d really like to improve now. Spent the past ten days assessing what I can, can’t and want to do and now here I am. Still need to figure out where I’d be on Justin’s levels.
Anyway, I am not great at it, but I’d really like more exchange with other guitarists, musicians etc., even in real life. Unfortunately where I live open mics are not really a thing. So, if any of you want to talk music, drop me a line.
I recently acquired an electric, but really prefer acoustic. Into Indie, Folk, Fingerpicking. Read you around.
To be honest, Tanja starting on grade 1 of Justin’s course will still help you and guide you and it doesn’t take long, before you know it you will be on to grade 3
Hi Tee, welcome to the community forum. I agree with others that the best plan is to start at the beginning. I did even though I had been strumming for over 40 years and already know all the chords. I found a lot of good advice on improving my strumming tone and rhythm and started the good practice of learning to play some grade 1 songs from memory. I also fixed a few bad habits I had picked up over the years.
Welcome to the forum. Acoustic guitar and fingerstyle are my favourites. What’s amazing to me is what a great reward it is to be able to learn the guitar. To sit down and pull a tune or two or three out of your back pocket just because you feel like it is a wonderful feeling. I started with Justin over 10 years ago and thanks to him I have that wonderful reward and you can too!!!
Hi Tee
Welcome to the forum
I would also recommend starting from the very beginning with Justin’s lessons, they’re filled with gems even if you’re not an absolute beginner. You’re definitely in a great place for making progress on your guitar journey
And this community is also amazing for interacting with other guitarists and musicians, and is so friendly and supportive
Happy holidays
Welcome to the forum Tee !! Trying to work out who this Tanja is, while I’m here ?
Good advice already given, start in the basement and ground zero. Work up wards until you hit stuff that is new to you. You will have then found your level. Simples.
Hopefully along the way you will have confirmed what you already knew and can do. And identified all the bad habits you may have picked in the past, easily done for sure.
If in doubt shout, plenty of help on hand ! The natives are restless friendly and only too willing to help !
Hello Tee.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. https://community.justinguitar.com/categories
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the community etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
Last - many, many people have been where you are now. You have picked up some guitar skills but are unsure how best to proceed. The advice is always as you have been given. Reset. Default to zero. Go back to Grade 1 lesson 1 and work up from there. Pay special attention to the technique and training and developing good habits that are an essential component of Justin’s teaching approach. You can accelerate through lessons where you can physically do things and still take value from the learning they contain.
Good luck.
