Neil's Recordings

Trying to move away from playing blues progressions with typical static barre chords and try to introduce some movement (with mixed success). First foray into recording one of these. Good fun! I’d say I probably enjoy playing rhythm more than lead, at least for now. Just need to find an outlet ie create my own tunes, or some backing tracks!

Practicing both the thumb over grip for 6th string root chords and also the C shape barre chord.

Working on Hendrix style fills with the pinky but not quite there yet, so will keep chipping away until video ready!

That is a really nice groove. I can already hear a solo in my head that could go over that rhythm that I will try once I train my fingers to play it.

I enjoy playing rhythm too and I will definitely transcribe some of your rhythm videos to GuitarPro this coming year for my practices.

Thanks for sharing in your learning log.

Another nice rhythm track. I sounds a little like a John Mayer style and I think that John Mayer is one of the more talented rhythm guitarist around. I am envious of guys like you who can wrap their thumb over the top of the neck and still play a partial barre chord. I have trouble just reaching the thumb over to play a D/F#. Anyway, all your videos are enjoyable to listen to and will be good tracks to jam to in 2025, when I start grade 4 and start focusing on improvisation.

Thanks for the kind words Steve. I’m trying to give equal attention to rhythm and lead playing, if not more rhythm.

Have you experimented with different neck widths? I can only just get away with it on strats, with any wider nut widths it’s not really doable. Even if you just mute the 6th string you can still play these barre shapes with just 4 strings or so. In context of a band you wouldn’t need the base notes anyway!

Trying to spice up simple chord progressions. This is a 1524 in key of A. Instead of just playing the E & A shape barre chords I was trying to link together but I came up with this after a half hour or so. My first real foray into making rhythm and lead into one thing but I’m chuffed with it. Good first step!

Maybe will add a lead solo over the top soon as I’m working on hitting the changes in my lead playing, takes alot of thinking and work still rather than just noodling in the scale but its all progress!

That sounded great, Neil. Lovely licks and great tone.

I know chord progressions are common and used in hundreds of song but the way you played that made me think of a song the STone cover when Keith takes a couple of songs while Mick changes costumes or whatever. Song title is on the tip of my tongue, which is annoying.

That was cool and I really dig the experimentation. I saw you talking about funk a few posts up and funk is definitely cool. If you want some funk, check out the band Cameo and their song Funk Funk.
