New Solo Blues course (with MatchMySound)

Personally, I haven’t been able to produce a pleasant sound without using my thumb.

I’ll focus on that in the next few lessons.

I didn’t realise how new this course was! I am only at level 3 in the normal course but I saw this, bought it (as my birthday present…) and I am loving it! Thank you, thank you!

I’ve been working on the Boom Bass with licks for about 5 weeks now with a week off in between to travel. I can play it pretty well at 90% speed albeit with occasional mistakes. My question at this point (since I’m getting tired of playing the same thing every day) is do I move on to the next lesson despite not yet having been able to play it at full speed? I am also working on lessons and songs with my electric as well as some chord theory work. My primary goal with this course at the moment is to get used to playing the lesson finger style on my acoustic and I’ve made faster progress than I expected. I’m feeling I want to move on but continue to practice the first lesson (not as frequently with the addition of the new lesson). My hope is that moving on to the second lesson will improve my skills further and will eventually aid in my ability to play the first lesson at full speed. I’m curious what others are doing and what your recommendations may be. Thanks!

Oh, I read your text then forgot to reply!
Joe, I would say that 90% speed is a nice number already! I’m not sure if I made it up to full speed when I learnt this one. WIll have to look again at the piece very soon!

I’d always go on to something with a new challenge and motivation in case things become boring, and pause this piece as long as you feel, but pick it up again later when you feel like it.

I sometimes could pickup something I had paused even at the same speed as I left it or at times strangely found I became better at it just through practicing something else (that was possibly related somehow).

Keep it fun!

Hey, nice to meet you - someone from New Zealand! quite not around the corner from here! (Germany)
I never want to push anybody to something, but in case you’d like to say hello in the introductory section, we’d get to know you at least slightly better  and you’d definitely get lots of nice welcome messages and certainly one from my friend (if I may say so) Rogier!

@domi7 Thanks for the reply! I’ve decided to do what you suggest. I haven’t played the Boom Bass for a few days and just tried it again today and found the 90 % speed even easier. I’m going to move on to the next lesson and revisit this after a while!

Joe,
I have been working on Boom Base with Licks for some time myself. My approach is to practice it slowly at 68bpm. I will increase the speed when I can play it through without a mistake at least 5 times. I have found in the past when I move on before I master techniques that I end up having to backtrack when attempting techniques that build on the skills I am developing in the current lesson.
Are you utilizing Match My Sound? It has been a game changer for me! I hope Match My Sound becomes available for tabs outside Solo Blues.
Good luck with your journey.

Well, it has been close to 6 months since I last posted here. I have progressed slowly and now have the Boom Base with Licks, Steady Thumb, and Hooker Vibes to where I am scoring over 90% when recording myself using Match My Sound consistently. When I posted last I was splitting time between the three lessons. I decided to take my own advice and concentrate on one lesson until I was scoring in the 90s. When moving on to the next lesson, I play the previous lessons through as a warmup. My progress picked up significantly once I made the focus change.
I can’t say enough about how Match My Sound has been a game changer for me.
