Hey all, new to guitar since Christmas. At 71, I’m still learning multiple instruments. Played 5 string banjo for several years now, so that helped with music theory a lot. I also love learning and playing the fiddle, tin whistle, piano, harmonica, sax, and ukelele. I’m no master. I just enjoy them all, and I’m not done yet. Once I get more of a handle on some of these, I have a few others I want to play with. I just finished the What’s Up? Session with Lee. Once it ended, I found the video and played along with 4 non-blondes; twice. Great time. Great fun. Looking forward to hearing from others about their experiences.
This Community is a great place for sharing music/guitar related experiences! Lots of like-minded people & also lots of older learners who are picking up guitar after retiring. I’m 62 & still working for another few years… just trying to squeeze guitar into my life with work, family, our dogs & taking care of other responsibilities while attempting to get some motorcycle riding in as well!!! Just not enough time in the day for all that I’d like to accomplish!
What’s your favorite type of music to play? Are you into Bluegrass? How long have you been playing banjo? I really like banjo & mandolin music! I have an Epiphone mandolin & play at playing it occasionally, but guitar is definitely my 1st love!
Keep it fun & good luck with your musical journey!!!
Welcome Jim, that must be very much fun exploring the different instruments! To tell the truth at the moment I’m refraining myself from buying a flute as the time I can spend with my guitars already seems a lot for my brain but never enough as I wish
Silvia, it all comes together once you have one instrument down. Go for it. If you get it, in a year you’ll be much better at it than if you wait or don’t get it. Enjoy!
Welcome, Jim! I’ve had a pretty roundabout journey with musical instruments, though the first I tried to get into was guitar. I stopped multiple times, but keep coming back to start again. This time around I’m feeling pretty good about it since I know a good deal more about music.
One of my proudest experiences with an instrument was about fifteen years ago when I decided to take trumpet lessons. As a kid kid I tried to play bugle, but couldn’t get anything out of it that resembled music. So, I convinced myself then that I’d never be able to and I wanted to prove to myself that I could. I managed to get pretty decent with it, and though I never really kept up with it, I still occasionally pick it up to see what I remember.
I’ve tried other instruments over the years, and though I never got past being to play a few tunes, it taught me a lot about different aspects of music and how it’s all related. Just look at heavy metal and how some musicians play Paganini violin pieces on guitar.
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Hi Jim, I’m a 68 year old resuscitated guitar noob. I started learning guitar in my early 60s but I fell off the bandwagon. Just recently, I climbed back on.
In my teens and twenties, I played bass with a Fender Precision model. Nowadays, in addition to learning guitar, I’m dabbling with drums, keyboard, and harmonica.
I love laying down new tracks to a backing track on my DAW using a FocusRite Scarlett 2i2. I’m not very good at any of this but I sure do love every minute of making my “own” style of musical noise.
Best wishes to you on your guitar journey along with all of your other instruments!
Hi Jim, welcome to the community forum. With some playing experience with banjo, piano, harmonica, ukulele and other instruments, you certainly will have a head start on learning more advanced techniques on the guitar. Have fun learning the guitar. If you learn to do home recording with a Digital Audio Workstation device and software, then you could combine your other instruments with the guitar.
Hey Jim, welcome to the community. I’m a bit envious at times of the multi instrumental talented people like you. Glad to hear you are enjoying the guitar. I’ve got a brother who lives near Kenly.
