For decades I dreamed of owning a Martin D-28. I’m actually kind of glad that I never bought one because, the older I get, the less comfortable I am playing a dreadnought. A little over a year ago I bought a Yairi FYM70 and I love it. I’ve wound up playing it twice as much as my other three guitars combined. Today I sold my dreadnoughts to my local shop and bought a Martin OM-28. Aside from the size of the body, the specifications match that of the new HD-28. The scale length, tonewoods, herringbone top trim and fretboard inlays are all the same. Considering its size, it’s a real cannon and I’m delighted. I’m hoping I get to break it in before I’m too old to play it anymore.
It looks awesome Greg! Enjoy your dream guitar!
Congratulations
The front is a gorgeous piece of spruce. Quite prominent silking (the lines running perpendicular to the grain), which is supposed to be a sign of an excellent tonewood.
Stunningly beautiful guitar Greg!
I’ll guess you’ll be playing that one often. ![]()
Congratulations!
When my playing improves further thats the one i want as well. Very balanced sound in the om i think.
I’ve always thought the OM28 was the best looking guitar Martin produces. Subtle elegance. I find the 35s and 40 series too ‘blingy’ for me.
The OM pickguard is also much nicer than the 00028 imho.
That’s a beautiful instrument. I have a Martin as well and still play it as a backup/ beach guitar. Very high quality guitar. Thanks for posting.
Jeff
I agree on the bling. I have no use for it. I played a OOO-28 and didn’t care for it. The shorter scale doesn’t have the same projection as the OM and the OOO has a 1-11/16" nut that doesn’t feel familiar to me.
I owned a 00028EC for a while, and while I did like it, I ended up trading it for a Mcilroy, as I found myself focusing on fingerstyle. These days I play electric almost exclusively, but I do have an Eastman OM28 that is delightful.
Enjoy the Martin - it’s all the guitar anyone could ever need.
Congratulations!
The Martin OM-28 is about as close to a perfect acoustic guitar as you can get.
Thank you! So far, I would have to agree with you. I’m 73 and during the past 16 months I purchased two guitars and sold everything else. The two I have now will be something my kids can fight over! ![]()
Hi Greg,
Thanks for sharing your insight on this. I’ve felt the same way about owning a Martin D-28 after trying one out at a local music store. About 5 years ago I bought a OMC-15ME Dark Mahogany Satin for the sake of a less expensive price point. I think the mahogany has a softer tone and have always been interested in getting a Martin with a spruce top for that brighter sound. If I were to get another Martin, I would hope to get the OM-28 or perhaps the OOO-18 smaller size. I can imagine that you are really enjoying it!
I’m hoping that I come across one at a garage sale, and I can just dust it off and give it a new home. ![]()
Cheers!
Mike
Happy NGD Greg!
Thank You!
