Hey Dhar, your learning experience on your OMC shows a pattern I see in most new guitar skills I’m learning.

Progress is slow for quite some time. Then, finally, everything seems to come together, and progress accelerates rapidly.

The “trick” is to accept this and not let the slow part cause you to become discouraged.

Doubling your OMCs in one week is great! Keep up the good work!

You ever just…not look at your fingers?

I started doing OMC while looking at my fretting hand. I got all the way up to 80 at one point and then decided I was cheating and I should not look at my fingers while I was practicing.

So I did that and my OMCs plummeted, particularly the D chord.

My number of changes has started to come back up and I feel like I’m building better muscle memory, but I’m also having more trouble landing my fingers next to the fret. Now I’m wondering, should I have not been looking at my fretting hand this whole time or am I making it difficult for no reason?

It’s totally ok to look at your fingers. Indeed as a beginner it’s necessary as you have discovered. Further down the track if you want to play in a band on stage then it’s better to be looking at the audience, but you can cross that bridge when you come to it. For now looking at your fingers is totally fine.

It is not totaly clear to me if the one minute changes are with a strum after each change, or is it only the change?

@dutchronnie you strum after each chord change

Thanks @chris_m, you’ve freed me from my own tyranny!

51 years old, picked up the guitar for the first time to really try and learn to play. I am up to Anchor Fingers video. What is a realistic daily amount of time to practice these early lessons, and how many days or weeks should be spent before going forward to the next video? Basically, do not want to overdo it out of the gate and rush the process.

Hi and welcome to the community. As you go through the course Justin gives you recommended practice routines and information on when to move on to the next thing. I suggest watch all the videos in module one. Then make a start on the suggested practice routine.

I can move from A to D quite good, D to A is trickier. I got 39 in a min.

Hi Michael, welcome to the community. Like @chris_m Chris said, I would go through all the videos in the module and then follow Justin’s practice schedule. In future lessons Justin gives a minimum of 2 weeks of practices before going to the next module. It is OK to move on to module 2 after 2 weeks even if you haven’t fully mastered the A to D to A one minute changes since you continue to practice this in module 2.

Great stuff and thanks, followed the replys and moving along pretty good and playing along with A&D with the music, no matter how roughly for the time being.

How do I mute the 5th string when changing from A to D?

You don’t. This exercise focuses on speed. Don’t make it more difficult than necessary by trying to mix in muting.

I finally understood my mistake with my A&D 1 minute chord changing exercise. I went back and watched the video again. It is about speed and flow. It is not about the nicest sounding chord. That is the point of chord perfect practice. Now, I was using the app and not counting my changes. The app said I would get say 23 changes. I was not getting better. However, I did was Justin did in the video and used a timer. I counted my own changes and got 43, then 42, then 44. I realized I was holding myself back. Somehow the app was not picking up my changes. I noticed that it was also missing strings in chord perfect practice. Interesting. Maybe I can move on now. This is fun.

Yes sometimes the app is absolutely accurate but on sometime it is so far off that its funny
