15 changes first go but a fair bit of practicing before that attempt. This is the first time I’ve felt like I am improving whilst trying to learn this instrument. thank you.
First time I got 17 second I got 30
Feel the burn each time and push a little more when you feel like stopping at second 48. Thats when the real muscle development is those last burning sets at the end. Dont stop
You can do it. You’re rocken it. ![]()

This excersize is so important. All this will pay off big time when you play all the rad songs at fast temps.
Remember to be kind to yourself.

Thanks! This helped alot. I have tried to start learning to play guitar several times over the years but just could never stick to it. My last attempt my teacher, although he is very good, was moving too fast for me and made feel frustrated as he gave me songs to practice right of the bat that I couldn’t do because the songs he gave were going to fast and I still struggle very much with strumming, so to change chords fast and try and strum at the same time was just not working for me and I have up again. So I do have some experience with changing chords, especially A,D & E so when I did the 1 minute practice I was surprised to learn I could do 60+ chord changes a minute and have them sound correct ![]()
not joking or making things up! Being able to focus only on the changes and not the strumming has helped me a tremendously! I feel there is hope again and might actaully stick with it this time around.
12 Changes my first go after a little bit of fumbling! I definitely got faster as the timer went on.
I do 2-3 short 15-25 minute practices a day right now, and I’ve been at it for a week. I found Justin Guitar today and I already feel like I’ve improved more now than I have in a week on my own!
So thankful this course.
Bro thays amazing, and so cool to hear. Keep up the hard work and you will see some quality improvments. Keep doing these 1 min changes, and then do the next one excersizes with the controled changes.
Do these with all your open chords you will find you can play so many songs that you will be so grateful for the time you spent doing this excersize.
I do it too still.
I am working these ecersize with my C#major bar chord to my Cdim7 and back. I have a song where i need to do that switch mutiple times on a tough 16th notw strumming patrern and I just keep flubbing it. Best way I know to fix that is getting back to basics. For me thats basic excersizes like one minute changes. So everyday. I do the C#min to C Dim7 back and forth. Its getting better. ![]()
Keep it up and I am stoked you found the site. Please, go introduce yourself and say hi to everyone. Don’t be shy. Lots of cool friendly and supportive peps here.

Hi Justin,
Thank you so much for your awesome guitar lessons! I watch your videos and practice along with great pleasure. I’m 44 years old and just starting out on my guitar journey as a complete beginner.
I have a quick question about practicing chord changes. Could you recommend some of the most popular chord sequences (like D to Em, or Am to C) to practice? I’d really love to focus my practice on the transitions that come up most frequently in popular songs.
Thanks again for all that you do!
In the key of C
vi, IV, I, V
Am, F, C, G
I, V, iv, IV
C, G, Am, F
This chord progression is super popular
So C to G
G to Am
F chord might be a bit advanced but you can work on the Easier F chords and do them so Am to F, and F to C.
Notice they are the same notes just shifted some, Tons of songs use these.
I am 73 and I have been starting over with learning to play more times than I can count. I have subscribed to far too many YouTube channels, but I believe I have finally landed on the right one with Justin. Justin referred to “chord perfect” practice, but I don’t recall what lesson that was mentioned in. I wanted to go back and review it.
Update: I found it in his ‘D’ chord lesson!
Welcome to the forum Marty. You’ve found the best guitar site on the net. Feel free to ask any questions you have there are a lot of very helpful members.
Glad you found the lesson you weer looking for.
Thanks! I do believe I have!!
My fingers dont get hurt as much, but building the mental model of these chords is actually quite fun
Thats a good feeling. You have achived the psychological response of rocken out hard. ![]()
Well done catching the eye of the rock gods
I was told this guy

made the ultimate sacrifice, to give all players coming after him the greatest possable chances to shread as possable. Someone even captured footage of him sacrificing to the god of calluses for us all to have amazing tone, rip killer licks and play for hours.

4 posts were split to a new topic: Any good tricks to control “clammy hands” on guitar?
I find it quite weird that during my first true attempt, where I did the full 60 seconds, I got 80 CHANGES (40 if two switches is one rep). I also have a snapped 1st string (thinnest), so that could be something to do with it
Thought id point this out, this is with like 20 messed up chords, mainly because i tried to go too fast.
a beginner who picked up guitar after 20 years off… Did 44 on my first attempt, 46 on 2nd, 47 on my 3rd, 45 on my 4th, 5th… Ok i will stick with this for the next few days
On my first practise using the app i got only 6 ‘registered’ changes. The app only seems to recognise perfect chords and is quite slow to move on to the next chord. I know that with a metronome I can get at least 30 chord changes in a minute albeit with imperfect chords and maybe hitting the 5th string on A chord. Should I ignore the app or persevere?
You can ignore the app. Just count the changes yourself and you’ll be fine. Mind you, try to make those chords sound as clean as possible. You can have a miss from time to time, but if the majority are sloppy, you will be teaching yourself sloppy chords.
Thanks again, @LadyOfTheCastle. I think I have already got into some bad habits! So I’ll need to slow down to get most chords clean. It’s a pity the songs on the app don’t go slow enough for me ![]()
