@twistor59, @TheMadman_tobyjenner, @liaty Thanks so much for the kind words. The open mic events are always such fun.
@TheMadman_tobyjenner Thanks for that Toby. High praise indeed if one can invoke such memories in another. To reciprocate, your previous Sound of Silence performance has inspired me with a song me that I hope to do at an open mic one day. It’s a long way from ready so not sure when it will see the light of day.
@twistor59 Thanks Phil. Truth be told I struggled a lot to come up with a way to add dynamics and I’m still not entirely happy. I changed my arrangement SO many times. ( different capo positions, changing vocal register, adding, removing, then re-adding the strumming section) Even made some more changes right before sound check.
@liaty Thanks Dave. Glad you noticed my attempt to engage. It was a take away from our last open mic after chat. And looking back my previous performance was VERY shoe-gazy.
I really enjoyed your song. I’ve tried slide playing, but have given up in frustration. But very tempted to give it another go after hearing you. I think you mentioned this somewhere but truly a test of one’s own ear. You did an amazing job.
Special shout out to @NicoleKKB, @Eccleshall and @rorystrat for three excellent debut performances. And finally, congratulations to all performers. I was completely engaged from the start with one great song after another.
@Notter Thanks again Mark, for being an excellent host. I also really enjoyed hearing you sing and play this time! Solid performance.
Thanks alot Dale!
Thanks Phil.
I did have a vocal double effect dialed in on my Play Acoustic pedal. I generally aim for a subtle effect, just enough so I think my singing (or guitar) sounds better with it than without. What I have noticed is the level of my singing and mic position has a big influence on how obvious the effect may be. So quite likely I got in a little closer and a little louder and so the doubling was more obvious.
Glad you enjoyed that last overdriven rumbling chord. I still need a lot more practice to get the timing of that chord and the switching off of the loop right.
Thank you so much Phil! We had a lot of fun with this song
Just caught up with show and it was another awesome event, it just keeps getting better and better. Well done the performers and thanks to the organizers.
Phil many thanks for a very cool feedback and yes - it was supposed to be 2 and a half bend, I think I nailed the pitch as per the song but was it 2.5? Didn’t think of it too much and of course thank you to Dave and Toby for such a wonderful words
But you made a really good point, Nicole. It really is great to see the different styles. How boring it would be if we all played the same stuff, right?
Such a great show this one. I was going to do a mini-review post after re-watching the bits I missed (due to warm up)… but decided not this time, it just takes ages to write the mini-reviews. So thank you to those who did!
@liaty @TheMadman_tobyjenner @twistor59 Thanks for the reviews & kudos guys. Really appreciate it.
I think this is the first time I’ve actually been satisfied with my singing. I’m not really sure how I did it. I had been trying to sing it similar to the record but it wasn’t sounding good… so tried this in practice and it seemed to work. So I’m happy with that. I was a bit bummed my hands were stupider than they were supposed to be. There’s a few dud notes in riffs, and high strings ringing out when they should be muted. Stuff to practice I guess! Lonely boy is a fun song to play.
I have to call out the OM debutants - all of different skill levels.
@NicoleKKB That was an awesome singalong song, I was in uni when that came out, and I knew the words! Great playing and feel good vibe.
@rorystrat New to the OMs but clearly an old pro, you’re so comfortable with your singing, and the guitar looks so familiar to you as to be an extension of your hand. Faultless performance.
@Eccleshall Chords all over the guitar, and a beautiful song. I could sense some nerves there (?) but you played through them. Lovely.
Guys and girls…I just did a “quick surf” among all your performances but made sure I didn’t miss one…what a show! The level of performances was really high!
I’m very happy to read this, as I was listening I thought you were just enjoying and doing great!
@Mari63 you’re are soo brave to play that and managed more than well with your nerves! That’s not an easy choice! I also love this song and enjoyed a lot you made your guitar singing it!
Congratulations to @NicoleKKB for your first guitarversary…only one year and you’re already this good!
Congratulation to all for your great performances and this special vibe throughout all the show. Please take my apologies for not giving a word to each one of you individually as you would deserve…time is a hard master but must thank you for bringing a little bit of those vibes in my start of the day
@liaty @TheMadman_tobyjenner @twistor59 Thank you guys for the listen and the great feedback.
@Silvia80 thank you for your nice comments, very much appreciated. And yes it was quite the show, wasn’t it! So many great performances.
Okay so durintlg the night I was in my couch for most of the night with brave Zoom support taking over the keyboard, so time to catch up on comments
Mark - really great performance, naturally converting from MC to performer and back is something I can only dream about doing and your performance was great, good choice on using Trio as a BT, really well performed! I can’t get my head around where I know this song from??
David - wowza, from simple strum da dum to fingerstyle and now a looper and lead play? Neil would be so proud seeing you blooming! It was really good well done and glad to see you becoming braver with each act!
Nicole - herzliche Glückwunsch on your debut! My wife was really excited about your song choice and I was too as it is really a great hit. Couldn’t tell if you were even nervous a pinch, you seemed so relaxed and played so well. Hey and even a little solo - wünderbar!
Stefan - man I loved that deep voice fills, really cracked me up! Really enjoyed it, was bobbing my head all along and I think it was a first time ever anyone performed a Nickelback song, so good stuff! Only thing I noticed is perhaps at some point you started to play a bit faster, but I get it nerves can do it to a person
Mal and Lara - what a harmony, blew my mind off! You guys become an Open Mic classic act by now, please please conitnue to be so
John - a sour throat eh? I don’t think so Mister, probably an excuse in case something went wrong which clearly didn’t so no need to hide behind an illness joking aside really good performance and quite complicated sections here and there which you really nailed once you got into the groove. And sound quality was awesome, but that’s to be expected from Rode
Jason - thanks for a sneek peek into the next one you might play with your band and cool you threw in the solo into your act, I am wondering how it’s gonna come out live on real life stage!
Peter - great debut, you owned it from start to finish. Great playing, clean singing and no tech issues - awesome!
Serhat - changing songs last minute just like a boss, killing it! You really played it confidently and well, cracking job and glad to see nerves perhaps this time around were a bit more grasped
Tjeerd with his classic difficult fingerpicking act, wow man you fly with this right hand, takes a lot of accuracy to pick like that! Well done loved it.
Ruaridh - wow a simple setupwas enough to capture a beauty of such a classic song, must be something to do with a great arrangement! What a debut, fantastic to see you with us with hopefully plenty more to come!
Eric - great mashup, two fantastic songs cleverly connected together, you sir delivered some really cool grooves to use that night, thank you!
Dave - what a nice sliding arrangement! You are such a good man learning a piece as a request from your fan a true rock star!
Mark and Jen - another wonderful act, you guys and your love to each other and to music really make it special. And Jen I loved the shirt!
Brian - you managed to get your spot, really glad our organisers managed to squeeze you in after a few reschuffles I already commented on your performance on another thread so all I can add is that Chris and Thor really greatly joined your band and made the performance complete, well done to Larsens and co!
Mari - such a cool arrangement, I really love those and of course we all know live perfoming is not easy so to get something enjoyable to the public (and it truly was) is an accomplishment. Well done and don’t beat yourself up about small hiccups which ware barely noticeable.
Tosh - stellar JC classic, loved it and so glad you joined us this time around! Love that you have your style that you fully embrace and you are proud of, clearly it suits you and makes your performances a pure joy!
Dale - wowza, another stellar fingerstyle/strum a like piece, you really hate easy songs don’t you?! another song that I can’t get my head around where I might have heard it but anyway… superb play!
Jennifer and Dan - knocked me off my feet honestly! Jen this was truly most difficult song you played so far, to play this live takes some guts honestly! Really well played and with Dan’s vocals - seriously I probably played this song a 100 times off my Spotify list since this OM and I listened to your slot probably another 100 times already, awesome and please MORE!
JK what a great song choice, loved this little expression pedal action, although during the night I thought you played with volume and not an fx, awesome my dude! And vox wise I think you were spot on for the whole song, so you are definitely progressing in this dept as well!
Jeff - what a finisher, a great LZ smashing hit to summarize what was a fantastic night! You really have those rhythm sections nailed down, honestly if you can play riffs such as this you are more than ready for more complex songs. I recommend Black Dog’s main riff to get your fingers more flexible!
Great night everyone, here is for plenty more to come!
Thank you for the great feedback Adi, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I picked the song as I thought it was something we’d all like to be.
Thank you Adi for your kind words, we are pleased you enjoyed our spot.
Thanks Adrian.
Thanks Adrian. Live is definitely different than playing in the music room at home!
Thanks for all the additional reviews that I have read, appreciated, and liked.
Just such simple encouragement and acknowledgement of performing and progressing is an invaluable contribution to my experience here … priceless.
Thank you, Silvia . It was the perfect way to celebrate it .
Thank @adi_mrok feedback always appreciated. Disappointed I didn’t quite get that solo right given the % of time it goes perfectly when practicing…but that said I got through it and pretty happy overall for a track at this stage. I’m further ahead - as demonstrated last night - than my band mates so we’ll be good to go soon.
