Hence the concern about breaking a leg lol. I went to do something on the computer this morning and thought ‘no way’! Went downstairs and used my work laptop

Did you try muting your desktop, choosing usb mic as default audio device and making sure your laptops or webcam mic is not picking up the sound?
If you go with your laptop just make sure to enable original sound in Zoom so no noise supression occurs

And chatting with Richard, I was reminded that to be absolutely certain you can go to the PC/LT Settings - Sound and select Manage Sound Devices. On that screen you can disable the inputs you don’t need.

I am quite astonished how different sound is being recorded between Zoom and OBS recording to file. Zoom must be compressing a lot more than OBS as sound is way down and quality is not as good as OBS. I reckon if you feed to Zoom via OBS might be even a bit worse?

I ordered a Kala KA-PWC . I wanted to stay under $200 but in addition to the sound on this one I love the look - so I sneaked over my limit I’m looking forward to getting it - hopefully I don’t still wonder why the hell I wanted one lol

I think this is a good choice, and I just found out why my volume was so low - since I am sitting on a new laptop my Zoom wasn’t properly set up and I had Original Sound disabled! 
Only found out by thinking why is my camera showing mirrored screen and that’s when I noticed all was not set up as it should! Now it’s just a matter of remembering to switch 48V button on my AI once it’s my turn all part of an experience!
