Hi everyone, Paul from Fareham on the south coast of England. Thought I would introduce myself and share my guitar story.
I tried guitar many years ago when my dad started teaching me, I was in my thirties then. I didn’t last long, got frustrated so often I gave up. Forward to late 2023, some 26 years later, and my mum was clearing out my dad’s belongings after he passed in 2019.
So mum says “do you want your dad’s acoustic guitar and his Fender?” I was 59 about to turn 60 in a few months so I thought why not let’s see if I can do dad proud. My biggest problem was how to learn, after some research I found Justin, downloaded the app and signed up.
Ten months later I’m still going, thoroughly enjoying it. I’m learning on the acoustic and occasionally try the Fender. I’m desperately trying to not rush through so have only got to module 8 and have a good practice routine. Having the guitar always out on its stand I’ve found really motivates me as it’s always visible.
I will have questions at some point, currently finding strumming more challenging than I thought it would be but if I’ve learnt anything it’s not to give up.
Hi Paul,
Welcome to the website, and thanks for sharing your story with us. As regards the learning process, just be persistent and patient and the results must come. (Let me reveal a little secret I’m 71, still learning, but enjoying my passion enormously).
Good luck!
Regards,
Tomasz
Keeping the guitar in view on a stand & keeping it Fun (along with consistent practice) are the most important things!!!
Sounds like you are on the right track!!!
Enjoy!!!
Hi Paul
I have been on my guitar journey since April and are having a bit of up and down journey with it!
I turned 60 and thought let’s do it!
As you say the strumming is more difficult that I thought!!
Also I am just down the road in Portchester!
Have fun and good luck on your guitar journey
John
Hi Paul, welcome to the community forum. If you have finished grade 1, then you should be playing some songs and already doing your dad proud. As for strumming, you are only getting started learning strumming in grade 1. I am just finishing grade 3 and I’m still working on my strumming. Sometimes I’ll be working out a rhythm in my head and my wife will look at me, see me moving my hand like I’m strumming and say, you’re practicing guitar in your head again, aren’t you So with practice, your strumming will get better and the songs will sound more like the original. Have fun.
Hey Paul, welcome to the community. I also started when I was in my 50s and now that I’m getting ever closer to 70 I’m so glad I did. Playing music is such great fun and wonderful for the soul.
Hey Paul, welcome to the community and thanks for sharing your story!
Have lots of fun, strumming will get better with time.
Maybe try out Justin’s Strumming SOS course!
