Questions about BLIM/Blues Immersion Course

Tom  I would not worry too much about missing 2 weeks out of the 6-month immersion. It’s pretty common to have other life commitment during the immersion. Every student will go at their own speed. And if you take into consideration the 1 year consolidation period after the course, it’s pretty clear that you will have other breaks.

I also have a question about BLIM. My position is being eliminated and my last day is next Friday, July17. No need to express sympathies as it’s all good and I’m happy with the package my company is giving me.

I have been so busy at work that I’ve been lucky to pick up the guitar once a month. I did play for about an hour the other night to prove to myself I can still pretty much play the songs I have performed at the few open mics I attended. As far as courses go, I have made it through the first module of grade three before life got in the way.

Since I will now have free time to set a dedicated practice routine, I joined the waitlist for the winter 2027 session figuring I can work my way through grade 3 and advance my playing to a better level.

I, like I suspect many others, received an email today about a possible autumn 2026 BLIM session. So my question is this, should I consider joining this earlier session knowing I still have the bulk of grade three to work through? Or, would taking it sooner overwhelm me and waiting until the winter session be the better option?

As an FYI, I do hope to improve to a level I can attend a week long Blues camp in Clarksdale Mississippi next year as a 60th birthday present to myself. I need to improve to the point that it won’t be a waste of money to attend.

Thanks in advance gang.

Tom, quite a number of people have taken Blues Immersion knowing that they had preexisting commitments that took them away for short periods. Others have also had to step out due to unforseen causes. It is only natural that across six months life can get in the way. Do not allow it to deter you at all.
Good luck if you go for it.

I don’t know the answer to your question as I haven’t done the course myself. I’ve been interested in BLIM ever since the first class was launched. I felt I didn’t meet the recommended standard and wasn’t ready for it so I didn’t join. I’m still not ready for it. I’ll never be ready for it. What the heck, I think I’ll do it anyway.

There have now been four BLIM cohorts. In each, there have been a good number who have shared recordings of their playing and progress. Because the Community sections for each is a closed space you will not have seen that. One place you can get a feel for the range of people who join BLIM is in the archive of before & after here: Blues Immersion (BLIM) Before & After - JustinGuitar Community

There have been some people join BLIM with some solid skills and experience of blues lead and rhythm and others who were only just starting on the basics. I would estimate that a large proportion - perhaps a majority - judging only from Community activity - started BLIM from somewhere around and about grade 2 ish. All seemed to find the 6-month study valuable and made massive progress from their respective starting points.

Thanks Richard! I will check that out. I am leaning towards a “what the heck, let’s try it now and jump start this thing while I have the time”

@frito I just finished the class. I would have put my self at the end of grade 3 start of 4. How I was at the middle of grade three I would have been fine. For your Clarksdale trip This would be the perfect course to get under your belt, and the sooner the better to get practicing. There’s a lot of no joke content, you dont have to maser it, no one will in 6 mo  , just get exposed and know you will have to revisit. I have many years of revisiting. If you have the time it makes it all the more easier. Time was way more challangeing than being more advanced thru grade 3/4. For your trip, the more time to build that muscle memory the better.

@trrads I had the exact scenario, unexpected family items to take time for a week here and there. yea I had a little make up or didnt get something done before the next module. but it was not any big deal. Dont have that keep you from taking it. If it was a few months then yea better off waiting, but 2 one week blocks. dont sweat it. You will be with the group, as most come and go due to life in the way.
