Stuart, as a fellow “advancing beginner”, I’ll give a +1 to the idea of playing scales if only for finger dexterity and muscle memory. The other reasons will eventually click, or not. But regardless of our guitar goals, dexterity and being able to physically move around the neck are important!

Just watched this lesson and could use a little encouragement. Did anyone else feel like there was no way this would ever click but eventually it did? Right now it feels like it’ll be really hard for this to become natural.

It will take time to train your ear to hear what “good” sounds like. Take it slow and easy. There’s no need to try to play “fancy” with slides, bends, 16th notes, hammer-ons & flick-offs, etc. at this stage.
