Should we really have to have guitars set up?

Why is this an issue for players?
If the nut slots are too high it is far too easy for fretted notes / chords in the first few frets to be pressed sharp.

The E string nut slot cut too high on one of my basses made it painful to play (i.e it hurt my fingers, rather than my ears ). I’m not sure if that might apply to a guitar or not…

You can see the difference in the string heights in these photos. As a complete newbie I was really struggling with the high action on my new Yamaha APX. After a few months a friend recommended a local luthier to me, and I had it set up and dropped string gauge. The difference was unbelievable, and worth every cent​:clap:
