SMART GOALS for Blues and Metal (Doom and hardcore)

I’m in Grade 3, Module 17, and Justin’s section on SMART goals really clicked for me (I’m a PM by trade).

My long-term goal is to jam with friends and play live for fun. My dad is re-learning harmonica, so playing blues with him is a big motivator.

I’m focused on blues and metal. Blues feels like the right foundation since so much doom metal grows out of it. Side quests so far: some slide guitar, and transcribing Sleep’s “Dragonaut” by ear.

My gap: I don’t have a specific blues style or artist I’m chasing. Derek Trucks is obviously the man, and I’ve enjoyed Andy Aledort’s videos, but I haven’t picked a lane.

Has anyone written SMART goals for something similar? I’d love to see how you structured yours.

What’s a PM?

a Prime Minister ?

I’m guessing Project Manager

Hi Nico, in your shoes I’d tell my dad to bring his harmonica at Christmas and commit to playing through a blues with him (from memory) then. Pick an easy 12 bar progression (in a key that matches his harmonica!) or pick a blues standard if at least one if you is singing.

Nothing beats playing music with others

If that’s too easy, add an introduction and/or a solo.

As a suggestion for something to play with your dad, you may want to take a listen to Neil Young. Many songs of his have harmonica melodies and quite a few don’t seem to intimidating (I may be wrong, I don’t play harmonica).

Maybe look at “Heart of Gold” for a start?
