Songbook - what do you do once you get to more complicated songs?

I donā€™t write a lot but the best way Iā€™ve found (for both lyric and progressions) is to simply have a notebook and jot them down. f Iā€™m honest I also use my notepad on my phone quite a lot. In particular for lyrics once written down you look at the page and start to play in your mind with themā€¦they can transform quite dramatically then.

As you are talking about riffs JK what I tend to do is to record it to DAW so I have a ref file in the future. I also might write it down somewhere in my notebook but I am yet to revisit anything. I think audio file though is crucial as even if you write something down you might forget the small bits like rhythm, accents, fx etc etc
